Southgate Gone. Interesting, they aint been doing too badly as far as opening Seasons go in my opinion
Apart from loosing 3 home games on the trot and having their lowest EVER crowd at the riverside last night. The fans have got him the bullet by staying away (The fact his management is still be questioned helped) Last nights win was irrelevant I reckon they have someone lined up and the decision was made at the weekend but they didn't want to go into a match managerless or with a caretaker. Apparently Gordon Strachan is a stick on for the job. There were rife rumours before last nights game that Strachan has been on Teesside and no matter what happened Southgate would be gone by today.
Bit puzzling, they're not that far off the pace and they're definitely in contention for promotion. Only conclusion I can come to is that they have a name like strachan lined up and they want to bring them in quickly... ... Shame, because I thought Southgate was doing an alright job.
He's been on thin ice for the past year and a half imo. Gibsons always backed his managers as much as he can, but it seems he's had enough now. As mentioned, they've probs had a manager lined up for a few weeks now.
The fans have done their talking with their feet and stayed away and Gibson can't afford to let things get any worse. Better off with a new manager now whilst they are a point off top and not playing their best. Whilst the job is looking a very good preospect for someone. Gives them chance of 2 months too see what they like about the squad then make what changes they can in January. As well as the names like Strahcan, Coppell and Curbishley an interesting name touted around was Big Greame Souness. He'd get the team organised as hell and he's a Boro legend but the only bad point is is he too old fashioned and out of touch having not managed a club for a while?
I just read that they are only a point off the top of the league this morning? Definitely seems harsh in that respect, though know all the boro fans i have spoken with recently want him out, which is probably reflected in their recent attendences and him having lost the backing of the fans.
He did alright with limited resources I think, getting relegated probably didn't help. I doubt he'll have any bother finding a new post.
Kinda sums up the 2 contrasts in overall vision for the 2 North East clubs in that League. Newcastle battling for top spot with little/no money = Manager Appointed. Boro doing equally as well with similar resources = Manager Sacked.
Southgate is a wet fish with no man managment skills and a poor motivator apparently. The teams position is due to the fact the squad is decent, cream rises to the top even with bufoons in charge just look at toon. Hes been on borrowed time for 2 years. Strachen is waiting to come in and that has pushed things on.
He was sacked because the fans have lost faith in him & last nights record low crowd for a league game at the Riverside was the last blow for Gibbo. This is not a surprising sacking as Boro have slashed costs by selling Huth, Tuncany, Downing & Alves but still have squad that need He was sacked because the fans have lost faith in him & last nights record low crowd for a league game at the Riverside was the last blow for Gibbo. More worryingly for Boro there was one bloke at the match that WILL strike another massive blow to Boro that is man is Bruce, Steve Bruce who will sign Sunderland born Adam Johnson either in Jan or when he is out of contract in next summer.more than 17K fans turning up to support it. I feel sorry for the bloke, fair enough he hasn't proved himself so far, but Gibson has made a bit of a cunt of him. If Gibson had any more established manager and told them to make the cuts he has made Southgate make they would have told him to fuck off. Southgate has been an absolute yes man and suffered because of it in the long run. It's a real shame as he was an unreal captain who loved boro and gave his all as a manager, and thanks to that hes probably not going to get a decent job for a long time. Its been a real headhunt by the fans an all, BBC Tees for the last week has consisted of angry fans calling for his head, I can't think of anyone who has supported him, in fact the only slightly positive comment came from a non boro fan.
But surely the decision on Southgates position should boil down to performance not weather the fans decide to turn up in support or not? In the scheme of things he aint doing too badly, Boro have a shit squad imo & despite a few hickups this season there not doing too badly so far. Gibson has came out and said the decision was made before last night and someone is lined up. It is down to Gibson and based on performances. Since Southgate took over Boro have gone from a UEFA cup final and finishing in 8th place in the league to being relegated and loosing 3 games on the spin at home with some embarasing performances and after every game southgate used the same line "we need to learn from our mistakes" The crowd need to be taken into consideration though, They are down 10,000 fans because people are not going to see thema s they've lost faith in Southgate. That's alot of ticket money then money taken in food/drink at the game. You can't allow it to continue if fans are stopping going to the game you need to do something about it. I wouldn't say they have a shit squad either, They have had more current England and England U21 internationals than Newcastle have had over the last few years. Wheater, Pogatetz, Taylor, O'Neil, Digard, Johnson, Arca, Lita, Emnes, Alliadamare, St Leger That's not a bad few players and they have a cracking youth set up. Bar your experienced midfield you ahvent got that much depth yourselfes? Sideshow Bob, Taylor, Simpson, Barton, Nolan, Smith, Gutierrez, Harewood, Amanobody Not really that much difference when you look in from the outside?
Eh? Have I not just said that: "Kinda sums up the 2 contrasts in overall vision for the 2 North East clubs in that League. Newcastle battling for top spot with little/no money = Manager Appointed. Boro doing equally as well with similar resources = Manager Sacked." Boro have good youth but the squads shit man, you can have all the academy players in the world playing for England but they lack experience. And im sure it was only a few months back you were saying how bad it was when fans revolt & end up getting their own way - ala the toon? Yes he got Boro relegated but when you look at the players we had in comparison to Boro last season you have to take some pitty on him. There was no excuse for us, for him theres umpteen! I'll say again I dont think he's done at all bad so far, yes theres been a few poor results from teams he should be bossing, but it's the most unpredictable League ever imo. All you have to do is look at any one of the top 5's stats to find they've lost & won some very strange games, but nothing imo to warrant a sacking. I think he could have definitely got Boro back up if they had of stuck with him, theres no excuse for the fans not showing support imo, look at the state Newcastles been in for the past 2/3 seasons yet gate attendances are topping those of most Premiership clubs.
the big fuck up was alves, we were bad last season but we needed some one to score. if he didnt waste the money he had on him we'd have been alright saying that he had to slash the wage bill by 7mill when he came in and was given next to nowt to spend last season hope we get strachan like
