    sound guys...

We had our resident "sound guy" in last night, his answer to sorting out a monitor speaker in the club was to hook up a guitar amplifier to the mixer's line out, he changed the EQs for our speakers so the whole venue sounds like a 60s mobile disco, and he tried to convince me that a budget numark mixer was just as good as a high-end vestax.

God knows where the owner finds these people

anyone else ever come across anyone as dodgy as this?

I've heard people ranting about how budget gemini mixers are the best

Its like what your dad says in relation to everything; "get the cheap one, its just as good as the one you pay £100 more for". Sometimes this is the case but when it comes to things like mixers/turntables I beg to differ

it was unreal when I was talking to him last night, I was complaining about how poorly built the mixer was (numark stuff is alright but it doesn't seem to stand up to club use), and his reply was "yeah but every 3-4 years you just spend another £200 and get a new mixer".

I said that surely it was better to get something with replaceable faders (like the vestax I have at home) and how the faders are better quality on higher-end mixers and he stood there trying to convince me that the budget faders are just as good as the penny & giles stuff

for bedroom gear, fair enough you can do budget (especially with mixers). For clubs, if you cut corners it shows.

About 4 years ago I was djing at a "rave" in an old church hall using an £80 nummark mixer and a pair of Nummark 1600's pumped through quite possibly the worst speakers I have ever came accross. All you could hear were the beats and hi-hats (if thats what they arte called). When you brought a mix in it was like the ground cables had been ripped out, all you could hear was that horrible howling noise. I stayed on the decks untill I could get one of the other dj's on, grabbed my records and got out of there

    All the time mate

Not naming names but bars that think broke berhinger mixers give out good sound quality on already ropey speakers set ups

Also hate pioneer 500 and 600 for not having amber lights so encouraging dj's to redline and think it makes no difference to the main rig.

Lack of monitors in venues is a killer

Seen some strange things in my time a guy running

2x 300 watt tops 4 ohms off a berry europower 2500 one perchannel and wondering why they blew everyother gig,

Doing the same with 2x 250 watt subs and getting the same results.

Someone swearing that soundlab were a good make of speakers over warfys the list is endless.

we have just bought four 1850's loaded with 18 void 1000's drivers

Using a matrix 3000 to power two of them and a berry 2500 bridged untill we can afford another matrix

So if your looking for any more bass pressure at gigs conway pm me.

    Re: sound guys...

    dear me

in the place i work, we had a guy from sound and vision come in to check over our soundsystem, who had pretty much the same crack as yours.

we've got a A&H Xone in, has been there for years - works fine and does the place justice. here comes this bloke with a gemeni 3 channel thing :spangled:

i argued for about half an hour that we needed more than 3 channels for all the equipment that goes into it, and he fucked off eventually - i rekon he just wanted to pinch the Xone.

although, a different soundguy came in last year to do the club/bar upstairs and installed a Pioneer CMX3000 and a DJM 3000, but wired it up all wrong so were were running off the left channel for about 4 weeks until someone realised there was no sound coming out of more than half the soundsystem.

which ultimately meant i had to crawl about in some dodgey old victorian crawl space where the amp's were basically just plonked in.

some-one obviously mis-informed the company that they knew what they were doing.

you should have seen our last mixer 'swapout' for the bar downstairs

we had this citronic pile of shit that had given up the ghost, and this bloke replaced it with an unrefurbished formula sound PM90 - 14 years old and just as bad

wouldnt class that formula sound mixer in the same boat as a citronic, despite its looks i bet sounds great. their mixers cost a forture and are built on shear sound quality alone.

a refurbished one would be decent yes,

    Ours had:

    1 working mic module
2 broken phono modules that played out of the left side only
3 broken line/cd modules (they had been botched with a soldering iron so they worked in mono)
and a bit of an iffy booth monitor control ;)

Unless you know which brands to buy second hand or build your own speakers.

alot of budget faders are the same 'ALPS' faders used in higher end mixers.

for example, the bottom line denon dnx100 (£149) mixer thing has the same faders as the pioneer djm 909 (£800)

that being said, ALPS are no match for p&g, infinium or pxf (eclectic breaks faders)

now vestax are being built in china, its wise to stay clear of them, the quality of their range has dropped loads in the last couple of years.

clubs/bars never spend any money on dj gear, its almost thought of as wasted money - they always tend to fix/replace something when you turn off the music during the busy period and people start to leave due to the lack of entertainment

try it, you look like a twat for 5 minutes, but you'll have new gear by morning :D
