    yup it's class news.

    Still taken too long though.

Was reading in the metro this morning and some bloke was saying it was an "appalling attack on personal freedom and private property" trying to support his claim with the fact that you are not "forced" to go into a pub........jackass.

Gona be great to go home and not be absolutely stinking!! Bring it on :D

cant fault it to be honest, it's not an attack of peoples freedoms - we can do it outside. i will be gutted not to have a cig and a drink though when i'm in a club - there's nowt better

so how are the government going to pay for the NHS when everyone gives up smoking?

they make £9billion a year from tax on cigarettes yet smokers only cost the NHS around £1.5-£2billion a year

I reckon this will only make about 10% of smokers give up. It's a good move though. I only smoke when I am out (and am attempting to give that up now), so the ban will mean that I will give up when it comes in.

That's a worst case scenario that simply won't come into play as a result of a ban in public places. The overall loss on cigarette tax revenue will be fairly low and will hopefully be offset long term by the reduction of NHS spending on smoking related illnesses.

    This is a win-win situation for non-smokers.

I think you'll be really surprised by how many people give up completely because they cant smoke in public

obviously there will be loads of the hardcore who wont give up.

If they government really wanted everyone to stop smoking then they would just ban it completely.

well thats not right cos smokers kill themselves quicker so don't use loads of NHS services they otherwise would if they lived longer. They will just die later of something else. the NHS will still have to pay for whatever they DO die of.

What about publicans' freedom to decide to allow people to smoke in their establishments or not?

I'm not really arsed about the smoking ban, it's a nice idea and all, but I just think it should be the venue owner who decides rather than a blanket ban from the govt.

    1) everybody dies.
    2) the longer you live the worse your health gets
    3) the worse your health gets the more you cost the health service
    4) the more you smoke the sooner you die

= the more you smoke the less you cost the health service

that seems logical to me. or do you imagine if you give up smoking you will live forever?

From the first of January it is completely banned from the whole of the University campus INCLUDING outside. We (the union) are an exclusion zone until the full ban.

balls. health/tabacco related illness oftens doesnt' show up for years. NHS will lose the money NOW

like Quick said, if the government were REALLY bothered aboutour health - an all out ban. instead its a nod to the 'health and saftey' briggade, they do the minimum to keep as many voters happy.

the amount of people who smoked would immediately go down drastically if it was banned completely. Of course there would still be people who would still do it regardless but this is always the case with any law.

If the government actually cared about health as much as they make out then they would ban it completely.

It is a massive cash cow for them...80% of the price of fags is tax ffs
