Shay Given to leave NUFC? Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given wants to leave St James' Park and is eyeing a January move to Arsenal or Manchester United. (Daily Mail, The Sun) ------------------
Re: Shay Given to leave NUFC? Depending on how much cash they get for him it may not be a bad move, Steve Harper is just as good as Given and the money they would get would allow them to strengthen other areas.
Said this about 2 months ago to my mates when the Boro keeper was linked to the Mancs, I said Shay will go to Arsenal but with him being Irish I would imagine MUFC is more his sort of club. Of course there are no quotes in either paper from Shay, it is a Newcastle insider. As for Harper he is very good by English standards but that means nothing nowadays as I only rate Robinson,Martyn & Green @ Norwich could turnout decent. If Shay does go Souey should NOT try & bring Brad Friedel to Toon, in fact Souey should treat all Blackburn players like Robbie Williams treats other members of Take That "There all shit & I never want to see any of them again". If I was Souey I would go for Van Der Sar or Carlo Cudicini both out of contract in the summer & both 2nd choice goalkeepers at there clubs this season. Van der Sar has only got the number 1 spot back because Crossley is out.
Behind Cech he is the best keeper in the league atm, he has been for some time id say even when Seamen / Schmichael were there as well ! Steve Harper isnt a better goalkeeper than Given but then again he isnt a shit keeper at all and would do a job ! I dont blame Given for wanting to leave if he does, he's done a hell of alot for NUFC and prob knows now he aint gonna do fuck all in his career staying, more so at the moment He could easily walk into the team of the likes of Man Utd / Arsenal at the moment !
If he does leave Newcastle that means he will of won more medals at Sunderland than he did at Newcastle
take off those tinted specs. I'm sure lots of clubs can claim to have the best keeper in the league, Niemi, Jaaskeleinen, Robinson, Martyn - all class keepers - all as good as Given
I dont think any of them keppers can really & I do rate Robinson & Martyn as the best English keepers around. I also think Shay is having his worst season ever for the Toon Shay is deffo the best keeper in the Prem if you takeaway the 2 fella's at Chelsea & I still rate Van Der Sar
well, that's an opinion...its wrong but... I think Given has been ok but not great this season, for about 4 years he's been very good but i seem to recall he had major kicking problems? And he also had a battle with Harper to get the no1 shirt for a couple of years (especially under Gullit). Niemi since he's come down to Saints hasn't put a foot wrong. Jaaskeleinen doesn't make many mistakes. Obviously I think Robbo is great Martyn has been brilliant for years and is still doing it. I do think Given is probably in the top 4 in the league tho
Givens kicking is superb & his dealing with the backpass is excellent & he is very (too) willing to take on the oppostion attackers. He didnt have battle at all with Harper under Guillit. There was spell under Bobby where Harper had run. Niemi is always bust. Jaaskeleinen has dropped clangers @ SJP & I dont rate him. Robbo was so great Spurs were in bidding war for him. Martyn is class keeper. Like I say Robbo & Martyn are the best of English goalkeepers.
nigel martyn should be englands #1. i always rated him above seamen. robinson i'm still unsure on, kirkland looks dire and lets not even talk about james. i also think cudicini would walk into any team in the prem bar chelsea.
After seeing Chris posts it remind me of the Boro & I would say their keeper is better than Niemi, Jaaskeleinen & Robinson
Schwarzer is decent but not as consistent as the 3 above. I am 90% sure Given had kicking problems in his earlier years at SJP. Harper did have a spell in goal under Gullit - didn't he play in the 99 FA cup final? He certainly had a run on the build-up to it?
So in the 2002 season they say We are now in 2004, with 2005 not that far away. Get it sorted Shanley
JS, In 2001 Sir Bobby said "The slight weakness was always in his kicking, but he's done countless hours on his kicking and that's improved dramatically." His kicking is fine now & he is very confident with the backpass
just making my point To be fair if he was in the PFA team a couple of years back that's good enough for me. Anyone voted in the team by fellow professionals has to be at the top of their game
Didnt Stevie Carr do it once? I am sure he was the only non-Arsenal or Man Utd player in the team or was that Ferrer of Chelsea
