We are probably about to move everything over to rackspace.com

By far the best price, bandwidth and support of the hosts we looked at.

    Have a look

How many visitors do you expect per day on average in the first year?

a dedicated server could be massive overkill.

I think you should look at getting some shared space. You can run a shit load of sites off a dedicated server. We have about 60 on this server and it's still not under load.

ah right thanks, gonna be sharing the space from the guys who are making the site at 1st, i think i might try an keep using that for a bit an see how much traffic it gets etc...

i'm still gonna say i'm getting my own for grant purposes tho! ;) :p

hopefully should have 5/6 similar databases/sites on the go so might look into it again then...

To give you an idea, this server could run this site 10 - 20 times over.

Forums create way, way more database connections/read/writes than any of our e-commerce systems, they kick the shit out of servers compared to normal sites.

You will also find it hard to use masses of bandwidth without sending lots of media files. I think all of our web sites/email traffic in total use about 150gb per month.

I'd look to get some shared space where the hosts backup everything for you. Just add domains as you need them. £50 a month should be fine for your first year unless you are the next ebay.

Feel free to PM me if you have any Qs.:)

a m8 of mine just had to switch from 1&1 as they dont allow you far enough down the route for some cms installs.

i can recommend the dreamhost service though. take a look at it :)

...and the dedicated server sounds like overkill m8, go for shared hosting first, then if its not enough you can always upgrade later ;)
