    Server Question

I need to install a PCI Fax modem in one of the servers here (im setting up a new desktop fax solution).

I'm probably being overly cautious, but before i shut it off and take it to bits is the procedure any different to how you do it in a PC?

It's Windows Server 2000, obviously there are spare PCI slots.

Just plug and play or does more need to be taken/other things to do as it's a server? It's a PDC so need to be careful....

    Ta :computer:

Installation of hardware under W2KAS/W2K3AS is pretty much the same as under 2000/XP.

Just plug it in and away you go, just do what you would normally and follow the same precautions with static etc.

    Thats good cheers

the static is a good point actually, i dont usually take a great deal of care on my own machine - whats the sort of steps worth taking when on a server?

Manof....no it's not for that it's for a fax system although we do use a modem on the other server for remote access, aswell as RDP.

This is for a fax system - user sends fax, arrives at server, software dials out and sends the fax!

Certainly better than the fax machine we have which is from the Crustacean period

That's if it will work of course

What I tend to do is switch my machine off at the wall but leave the power plugged into both the machine and the wall - that way if you touch the chassis before working on the PC it will earth through the existing earth lead on the PC :)

Failing that you can get anti-static wristbands (the new must-have thing :camp: ) or mats from places like maplins, they shouldn't cost more than a tenner.

You should be alright with your modem provided it's a fairly decent one... If it's a cheap one it will slow your machine to a crawl because it will use up processor time instead of doing the work itself.
