    Satellite broadband

    Anyone?

Im lookin into this... seems simple enough... apart from having to drill another hole through my wall to get a cable to the dish :p

the new plenexis service uses the 28.5 D East Eurobird satellite (same as a number of sky channels, so ya can use ur sky dish to get access)

I just wanna know opinions... if anoyone has any knowledge or experience in this... let me know...

i dont actually have a dish (bit of a setback i know :p ) but i figured if it's worthwhile...

    :)

    its cheap as chips....

upload speed isnt an issue if all u want is to get stuff down nice n quick..which i assume spud wants...

u can get 2 way satellite if you need speed BOTh ways but thats BIG BIG money

One thing tho mate - it is a PAIN IN THE ARSE!!!!!!!!!!

I used to use Europe Online when I couldnt get normal broadband.

    Plus points:

Scheduled downloads arrive at speeds of OVER 1 MEGABYTE a second most of the time...

You can get 3rd party tools (File Fetch Manager was one of em) so people can set anything they request to be shared - then the program lists everything thats sitting on the proxy servers and when its due for delivery - you can pick and choose...a LOT of stuff to be had ;)

    Negative Points:

You have to schedule stuff to be delivered normal downloading thru their proxies is (was) shocking - altho still at times faster than a 56k....

There are restrictions on where u can request files from (as in only port 21 FTP's) etc.

All in all - if you cant get broadband tho - go for it - if you aint arsed about messing about and constantly tinkering with it.

You can get awesome results if you put a bit of time into it.

when i was a lad (lol) there was only EOL (Europe Online) that we could use - it was shit hot to start with - you could download realtime at like over 500k/sec..............then the service went to pot and u ad to schedule downloads....not as good but they delivered them at stupidly fast speeds!

not sure what sorta ppl are offering it nowadays - www.isprevew.co.uk maybe worth a look!

im tryin all kinds now... one thing which is good for web browsing -

www.onspeed.com... compresses everything... makes a noticable difference to web browsing (although picture quality is reduced) apparently it speeds up broadband web browsing as well, but the effects are less noticable... can get a free 28 day trial, it's making my browsing slightly more bearable, but my downloads are still stupid... i have one download q'ed in shareaza that has been d'l in for a good 2days... and STILL has like 200+ hours left

    *sigh*

Dont trust any of this make ya web browsing faster stuff mate - if it worked, then it would become standard part of all ISP's setup to reduce traffic blaaaa.............

Think satellite is ya only option - jus find a decent provider which doesnt cap ya.......

OR - get EOL and jus use the hacked software which am sure still exists sumwhere!

I stand corrected - the thing i meant was tye EON FFM program i used to use - a german guy called "Merlin" wrote it - he made it so you had to login with ya eon detail sbe4 u cud use it..to stop freeloaders..

With this you could PICK what u wanted to get..

There are programs jus to sniff the network tho and grab what other ppl are getting - they have 5 proxies (they did anyway) which u can keep a check of and grab stuff that people HAVENT made private..........most stuff..
