Clever, However i thought Giggs has took it himself so if the linesman hadn't been told then he can't let it go and had to flag.

As soon as he did they couldn't do anything else official wise as i bet the linesman wasn't even paying attention to if Rooney rolled it out of the quadrant or not. All it would have took was for Rooney to say i'm taking this now to the linesman and it would have worked.

Total brilliance, as clever as Giggs cheeky free kick against the French a year ago in the CL.

When you take a corner do you have to be given clearence to go ahead and take it by the lines man? I am sure the check if its in the "D" then nod or something but is this law? Really a player shoud not have to expalin his upcoming actions to a linesman?

I was gutted it got ruled out, when a games as tight as it was then it sometimes takes something sharp like this to break the game... Chelsea should have been alert

Well you have to tell the ref if your taking a free kick quickly when they are counting out a wall so i'd imagine it would be the same if your taking a corner that quickly.

The linesman flagged as he thought Giggs took it himself all it would have took was Rooney to say I'm taking this, he didn't need to shout it just say it too the linesman so that he knew he'd took it, as it was the linesman had no clue and just saw Giggs run a few yards with the ball and cross it so he flagged.

We have done it a couple of times on a Sunday.
If Giggs was deamed to have touched the ball twice, why didn't Chelsea get a free kick for it.

Just from memory does Rooney roll the ball into the D then out all in one movement then it would be a foul corner, his foot would have to leave the ball and the ball would have to stop moving

Apparently because it was rolled forward then back, the dead ball part was when he was changing direction of the ball, albeit for a fraction of a second

I heard Andy Gray and some ex referee last night saying it was totally legal and that his foot doesnt have to leave the ball

If he had told the linesman what he was doing then it would have stood, so surely everything else was legal?

yeah its completely legal, just very rarely seen in the premiership, or even the championship. rooney probs didnt have to tell the linesman, but should just to make sure. its probably the linesman being a bit of a thick cunt and not knowing/realising.

There was no reason at all for it to be disallowed it was perfectly legal and quite genius really - the linemans only flagged because he had never seen anything like it before and didnt really know what do do imo

i am really pleased vidic scored from the next one as well - justice was done

It sad you have to "presume" someone is a thick twat and expalin yourself to them in the notion they wont have a fucking clue what you are doing/meaning

I find myself doing this to ppl in everyday life more and more often

It was an absolute touch of class by them both- real shame that it didn't stand.

Does anybody remember a few years back when Giggs and another player for Man U (it might have been Scholes?) both struck the ball from a free-kick at the same time and it nearly went in?

I remember Liverpool doing the same thing a few years ago, think it was in a Champions League match.

Sure it got pulled back then too.

you'd think a linesman in the top flight would have at least heard of this being done before
