I went a couple of months back, for 4 nights. It was good, but i woulndt stay much any longer than that.

I stayed in Trastevere, which was on the west side of the river. Decent area with lots of restaurants (mostly a lot cheaper than the really touristy areas). The majority of the city centre is on the east side.

Go see the Collisueum, Spanish Steps, Vatican, Trevi Fountain, Palazzo Venezia. Get an open top bus tour on the first day.

Only negatives really are - the ground floor of every building in the entire city is covered in rather shit grafitti (apart from things like the Pantheon and the Colliseum), and the streets are full of people hassling you to buy crap everywhere you turn.

Rome is great, I stayed at a hotel near the Colliseum. It was a bit basic, but it was in a good location http://www.lancelothotel.com/. The rooms don't have fridges which is a bit of a faff in hot weather.

Go see the Colliseum, the roman forum, Trevi fountain, the pantheon, the vatican.

The best coffee I had over there was at Tazza d'oro (near the pantheon).

There's a load of beggars and people trying to sell you stuff near any of the monuments, and we saw gangs of teenage girls pickpocketing, so keep an eye on your belongings.
