SHINDIG: SAT 30th MAY - ROBERT BABICZ (LIVE) / RIPPERTON (DESSOUS) / NEIL BAINBRIDGE / PAUL T (BREAD & CIRCUS)

Moving between the genres of Electronica, Techno and classic House, Robert Babicz’s highly respected career and standard of his productions has reached almost audiophile standards, with every DJ under the sun supporting his 2008 bombshell ‘Dark Flower’. Robert Babicz is one of the most versatile producers and true pioneers of minimalistic sounds as well as raw grooves - all with his powerfully mastered and deep baselines on labels such as Systematic and Kompakt.

As Babicz proceeds to play as a musical puppet master from the helm of his 100 per cent live set up, joining him this week at Shindig, Ripperton spins the melodic and lush end of house, minimal & techno. As one half of Lazy Fat People, he has put out singles on Border Community, Wagon Repair and most recently on Carl Craig’s Planet E label. Solo, Ripperton has released on Connaisseur, Crosstown Rebels and Liebe*detail with his signature slurring, drunken melodies and well constructed rhythms.

Robert Babicz at Shindig: Acid Flashback

Robert’s musical career starts out quite exceptionally and indeed rather fabulously in the early 90s. Right after the phenomenon of Chicago and deep house, techno began to establish itself as a brand new and totally original part of youth culture. In 1989, the year the wall came down, Berlin sees the first big techno happenings like Love Parade and Teknozid. But Cologne also sees many new clubs like the Space club or the Sweatbox. Pioneers of these days were Reinhard and Wolfgang Voigt (now running the Kompakt empire), The Modernist, Mate Galic, Roland Casper and Rob Acid (aka Robert Babicz).

In order to understand Babicz’ music, you have to understand the extent to which the man is the studio and the studio is his instrument. This is not just some young producer dropping loops and tweaking plugin presets on Ableton: Babicz carefully shepherds his signal through an intricate process that he’s been developing and refining since the early 90s.

It quite clear to stereotype Babicz as a gear freak i suppose, and his attention to his studio certainly puts the new breed such as Zabiela to shame…almost every box has been opened up and tweaked, soldered and replugged to within an inch of its chip and transistor life.

Babicz joins Shindig this Saturday to play musical puppet master from the helm of his 100 per cent live set up, Moving between the genres of Electronica, Techno and classic House. Robert Babicz’s highly respected career and standard of his productions has reached almost audiophile standards, with every DJ under the sun supporting his 2008 bombshell ‘Dark Flower’. Robert Babicz is one of the most versatile producers and true pioneers of minimalistic sounds as well as raw grooves - all with his powerfully mastered and deep baselines.

In the last few years there has been a proliferation in the amount of people producing really good techno, acid, minimal and everything in between. The majority of these producers are new, but Robert Babicz is an example of an older producer that has managed to stay relevant by reinventing his sound. Many of his new tracks have that trademark acid sound, but what we are listening to is most definitely acid for the 21st century. This man is not stuck in the 1990s, him and his machinedrum are moving with the times….

Robert Babicz plays LIVE at Shindig alongside Ripperton (Dessous) and resident Neil Bainbridge this Saturday 30th May.
