Rob/Bri!/MOS/Vandenburg/IT proffesionals Whats is the industry Standard Security and Back-up software? Zone and Ghost? ta!!!!
Re: Rob/Bri!/MOS/Vandenburg/IT proffesionals Winroute and ghost on windows boxes IMHO. Winroute is harder to setup than zone etc but it's a 'proper firewall'. If you are looking for a firewall to put on many boxes on a network id say don't bother, spend the cash on a good hardware firewall (£300 - 1k), it will give you more control and less admin time than several software firewalls.
sweet...cheers. Its just for a stupid assignment. Got to do a project plan for an Installation of PCs, LAN, Software, Newly Developed software etc....for a company. Its stupid as im a Multimedia Computing student, and know sweet FA about any of this!
Backup - Ghost....by far the best! Security - as rob says, a hardware firewall is the only option really for high security...software ones r ok for home users but thats about it! Best of luck with the assignment mate!
sounds like your assignment is something that ill get to do in the near future, im doing Network Computing And yes, Ghost is the top dog at Backup!
ta lads! Its a small business with - Head Office 4 Branches Ive put a central File server at the Head office (Central storage of files - in assignment brief) Back-up Server (for backing up stuff)) Web sever at the head office (for the new web system developed) then PCs at each branch with a server at each branch (for the LAN + sticking all the software on). They can then connect to the head office server via dial-up.... sound ok? Im not sure about how much detail i have to go into about the kind of Network or anything tho... STUPID assignment. Im a 4th year and this will be of no use at all to me probably.
lol well that sounds alright like! Although.....im not sure a dial up is the best option? Maybe an "Always-On" Connection would be more appropriate? By dial up, i assume you mean quicker than 56 k?!
agreed - depending on costs.... if cost isnt really an option, a leased line linking the offices... cud always go for isdn as a cheaper option if speed isnt too important...
I'm just doin an assignment similar to this.. Found that majority of businesses still use tape back-up etc.. seems slightly old to me but apparently there really reliable. Also found that theres a technology known as "mirra servers" might be worth a look.. http://www.wired.com/news/infostructure/0,1377,61435,00.html Thats a link with a bit of info on em, not much but it seems like a good solution..
that mirra server looks pretty good like! and yes, tape is still a very popular backup solution, its ultra reliable, slow as hell most of the time though!
VPN over Internet seems pretty good. ASDL at the branches - works out cheaper than leased lines if u want the speed.
Firewall, been using Mandrake Firewall (MNF), good standalone linux box OS. Backup, aye ghost, Veritas backup, if your stuck on ancient servers like we are
our old place used to use Veritas BE - always did the business, especially with intelligent disaster recover plugged in, clever stuff!
