If your looking for good mixes by Hawtin, the older the better.

Some of the stuff he does these days is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz material imo.

Check out his Mixmag live mix from a good few years back.

The Closer To The Edit album was good in that it was really cleverly done and one of the first mixes done in that way. Although some of the album sounded decent, alot of it was sleep inducing minimalism to me.

I don't really like closer to the edit - gutted I missed him at sound city when he was doing his decks efx & 909 live - that would have been worth seeing.

I reckon that's from hanging round with villalobos too much!!!!- I've seen him play hard as nails sets but when they were at the arches a while back it was way too minimal

    Yeah could be.

His recent sets all follow the boring minimal track/cut the bass for 4 minutes/drop the bass back in/play another boring minimal track, routine. If you're going to insist on playing mega-long sets, you need a little more than that.

I couldn't agree more- I've seen him play hard sets and keep it hard but at the arches, it was sto-start-stop-start all night.

    never really got going

    That's exactly what I thought.

Just being moinimal for the sake of it without bringing anything interesting into the mix - dull as fuck if you ask me.

Like lee said, closer to the edit was a perfect example - "look at me on final scratch, which I've just helped develop" - WELL WHY DON'T YOU FUCKING DO SOMETHING INTERTESTING WITH IT AND SHOW US WHAT IT'S CAPABLE OF THEN?

With hawtin being the biggest name associated with all this minimalism, its easy why people associate the word minimal with boring.

The whole idea of minimalism (in whatever sense - music, art, etc) is that what is actually there is so good that it doesn't need anything added to it, as it would ruin the effect - something that the current music of Hawtin/Villalobos lacks.
