restricting user access in 98/me/xp etc I need to know how to lock out users access in all of the above o/s's . i.e to stop users installing apps that they shudnt ( messenger etc )as well as changing settings and deleteing things .....??? Any system admins out there know wot i mean ??? ..fidds... :spangled:
pretty much cant really as they stand on the 9x os'..... u gonna av to install sum 3rd party apps..... google it mate - shud be some about. xp - u can create groups and add users to them groups - then assign permissions to the groups..create policies etc... google it mate if u aint 100% theres tons of guides
would it be better if i changed all the pc os's to sumit like nt 0r 2000 ??? got aprox 20 pc's on a network , all of various ages and processor speeds and a nitemare variation of os's !! the public have access to em u see n keep friggin about with them n changing settings !!! ..fidds....
to be honest, windows 98 isnt a network orientated operating system,... so locking it down from being played around with - is going to be an arse at the best of times. Look into getting windows NT or 2000 installed on them i reckon.
yeah mate stick an NT based kernal OS on em (NT/2k/XP) and then u got more control over permissions....make sure u format the drives with NTFS file system - then u can set access rights for files/folders
Use WinLock Pro - think its by Vision Soft or something, a quick google should sort it. Alternatively, you can use permissions with the appropriate OS, but fuck that for a laff, WinLock is much easier. NB, have not read thread, just answered Q. Harry
we got winlock a few years ago and its a pile of shite, got rid of it before even implementing it. What about using 'Poledit' (Policy Editor), didnt that come with win 95/98, you can lock things down like desktops and other settings, we used quite alot back in the win95 days, its nothing special but if u cant upgrade your systems then it could be an easy answer
You want to purchase a program called "Deep Freeze" It basically caches a copy of Windows each time the PC is started up. So users can install whatvea they want, delete registery files etc ..... All you have to do to fix any problems is restart then the machine reverts back to the orginal clean copy of Windows .... But other than that go for Windows XP Pro as most others suggested
could be a tricky one, depends whethe you're going to have a policy that it picks up from a server or just have a local policy to lock it down. local policy on each machine with it's own login is probably easiest to set up - but a central policy all machines use to lock themselves down with would be more efficent - if harder to implement for a novice - no offence! we've got some crackin policys at the uni - cant even use right click option!!
