    Red hot laptop

No, not a new porn channel for geeks.......

Georgina's laptop gets really hot and keeps going off. We're assuming the two are related. And when I say really hot, I mean too hot to touch.

Any ideas what might be causing it?

    Fan maybe?

lithium ion batteries are known for doing this.

In my experience, all laptops get pretty hot after prolonged sessions of use.

Not much you can do about it other than perhaps get a new battery.

Also beware that using a laptop on your lap reduces sperm count and increases risk of arthritis.

some laptops have power management for the fan (mine has a setting like the one below (but not in german :p)

The setting is the chip on the left hand side with the drop-down menu next to it. Depending on what make georgina's laptop is, it may or may not have this, but if it does, turn it up to maximum and try turning down the clock speed for the processor. It's possible on mine to turn the fan on permanently :D

The settings for this are usually in the control panel.

It's possible to download a prog to monitor the temperature of your CPU/motherboard from http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ .

This should make the machine run cooler. If it doesn't, Maplin do laptop cooler mats that may come in handy

    mine does the same
i stand it on 2 dvd cases, 1 either side so that there is a good supply of air around it and it helped most times until our lass has the bloody heating on full blast
i also have it next to an open window
everywhere else it works fine except in my apartment, which is normally quite warm without the heating on
definitely sounds like its overheating and the built in safety system is switching it off before any damage can be done

Get a biscuit tin lid - works as a heatsink AND can get extra ventilation!

    so many n00bs

Lee - if its THAT hot then i doubt its just gona be the battery, they do get hot...but if its freezing/going off aswell then that definatley sounds like its overheating big time.... could well be the fans

    - Don't restrict the fans by putting the laptop on your lap
    - Check that the fans are working properly.
    - Buy one of THESE
    - Apply ManOfScience "Biscuit Tin Lid" approach as outlined in MoS TT.42
