Red Dwarf Red Dwarf in TV comeback By COLIN ROBERTSON SCI-FI geeks are in for a treat — Red Dwarf is making a comeback. The cult show’s cast are reuniting for a final hurrah to celebrate a decade since the series ended. Chris Barrie (Rimmer), Craig Charles (Lister), Danny John-Jules (Cat), Robert Llewelyn (Kryten) and Chloe Annett (Kochanski) have all agreed to take part. Bosses at digital channel Dave have ordered four 30-minute shows for next year, which will take viewers on a trip down memory lane. They will see the stars pull on their old costumes for some original sketches and also feature some of Red Dwarf’s best bits. An insider said: “Red Dwarf was one of the Britain’s most cherished shows, which while it seemed quite geeky, had a huge audience. “At its height eight million viewers tuned in so it feels only right that we should have a celebration. “All the major cast members have signed up — even those who have been in the news for the wrong reasons lately.” The Sun revealed how 47-year-old John-Jules — also a regular on children’s series The Story Makers — allegedly went berserk with a 16-inch knife after two dustmen refused to empty his bin at his London home. Charles, 44, has also courted controversy after being filmed smoking crack cocaine in the back of a taxi. Red Dwarf, which centred around the crew of a mining spaceship, ran for eight series on the BBC from 1988 before it was finally axed in 1999. The spoof sci-fi show made household names of Barrie and Charles — who now plays taxi driver Lloyd Mullaney in Coronation Street.
Wicked news, I fucking love Red Dwarf. It's probably the first comedy show I really fell in love with. Bit disappointed it's a retrospective-type thing as opposed to a new series or an extended special, but still buzzing.
as much as i hate to say it, i bet its a pile of horse shite. i bet its too over-budgeted and no-where as near as good as the previous dwarf's, it'll be wrong to see it with a more modern edge tbh. some things are better left alone IMO you heard it here first
Isnt Kieron Richardson in it or was? Nonce as well wasnt he ? I never ever used to like it when i was little so i dare say i wont now, with or without that "armed response"
If they re-made it with the same old-fashioned type effect, it wouldn't suit todays market. If they do it all modern effects and nifty camera work, it won't suit the fans of the old, and new viewers will probably think wtf. I agree with MistaK. Although I'd like every old comedy series to come back, some things are just suited for a certain point in time.
Thought the last 2 series were gashflaps. It became a parody of itself almost. The first few series were utter classics - but then again im a fan of 'low tech' sci fi stuff like aliens, starwars etc so really loved this. Be interesting to see what they do with it.
Totaly agree loved the first 3 series then it just bacame a farce still enjoyed bits though and remember everyone at school calling the teachers smeg heads and the like.
i love red dwarf like, the later ones were a bit soft like but the older ones were class, got better when they changed llewelyn to kryten i thought
I really liked it up until the end of series 6 I think where they have to fight their future versions. Series 7 and 8 where they significantly upped the budget and brought in Kochanski is when it all turned rather wank.
Series 1-6 were absolutely immense. It was never the same after Rob Grant and Doug Naylor's fall out (and Rob Grants subsequent departure as co-writer). The show was never the same after he left. I would only want to see new episodes if Grant/Naylor sorted out their beef and started writing together again. I wouldn't mind a "new" looking series with modern sets/effects etc, as long as they recaptured the shows original character dynamics.
