    Recording Help

    Areet

Right, the crack is..! I've recently been given a laptop by my pops. I have tried to record a mix but i'm having major problems.

I'm using Jet Audio to record, the record lead runs from my mixer into the microphone port in the comp but when i'm recording the record volume is always in the red and doesn't record . I have tried turning the master & gain(s) down, fiddling about with the volume settings on the laptop etc etc.. The only way it works is when the gains are turned almost right down to zero which makes it almost impossible to get the levels correct etc..

I realise i may just be thick or the laptop i'm using is pump but if anyone can shed any light i would be very grateful

because mic input, has a lot higher input level than line in which you should be using.

Does the laptop not have a line in?

Download a hooky copy of Traktor and use that, it'll link straight to your mixer and has a built in record function!!

Buy a cheap external soundcard with a phono in & out. The quality will be much much better and wont cost much either.

he's right - the sensitivity on the Mic input is much higher than line in.

open the volume properties, go to advanced and select the 'recording' panel. mute all the other inputs, then adjust the volume setting - it'll be right down the bottom but move it tiny amounts - have audacity/soundforge open at the time so u can see the levels with music coming from the mixer

m-audio do a nice usb sound card which isn't too pricey and should last you for years - the fast track i think its called - but there's loads on the market though that are reasonably priced. some have external power which means you need to plug yet another power pack into the mains but look for those that take power direct from the usb port itself to save you on cables and power requirements.
