I dont want to see a recession or poverty in the UK, but we need a housing market crash to correct alot of problems in this country, and to give people today, and their kids in the future.... a chance of owning their own home without resorting to a lifetime paying off a miserably high mortgage.

We need rates at about 6% before that will happen though - for now the average man on the street will just tighten their belts a little bit and buy a few less beers and takeaways a month.

Ignoring what I said at the top, I don't see any end to the housing price rises. As the UK population continues rising it's only going to help the housing market. Research done last week (I forget by who) predicted housing in London to be double what it currently is within the next five years. That's frightening!

millions of people have been denied the basic ability to buy a home and live in it, or bring up a family - without getting into massive debt.

The middle classes are holding off from having children and starting families because they simply cant afford it any more - probably due to houses costing up to triple what they did 10 years ago. The government has excasserbated the situation by providing cheap credit to people who cant handle it, which has created a massive speculative bubble, pricing ordinary people out of the market and forced into renting from middle aged people made rich from the houses they bought in the 70's, 80's and 90's

The 'average' person cant afford the 'average' house these days - the entire market is at breaking point.

The market will correct itself in time - but people forget a house is just a load of bricks and mortar ... hardly worth 200 grand for a 1 bedroom flat are they?

are you sure thats the case, i know for a fact the only reason my parents could afford a house was because they both had jobs worked there arses off never went out, my dad played in a band at weekend for extra cash.

Today people can't afford to buy houses because they want plasma screen tvs, surround sound, nice new cars, modern appliances, expensive decoration, all the best stuff to fill that house, basically people want everything they can't afford. If young people were willing to sacrifice like mine and most of our parents did, then they could afford to buy houses.

your argument makes no sense at all..

the house price increase reflects increasing demand for houses and increases in peoples income.

if no one could afford the increased house prices they wouldnt be rising...simple

the only time house prices will start to fall is when there has been big increases in new houses being built and supply starts to outstrip demand..

House prices have increased for 100s of years decade on decade ...this is nothing new lol

The percentage of houses being bought by first time buyers is at a massive low... so who is buying the houses? People who already have houses - so they can 'rent them out'

so people who already have houses, are pushing up prices for those who dont have them.....

If this country has produced comments like that... then i wonder about the future.

Why should the average person have to rent their home from some middle aged baby boomer, when the country could support millions of new houses and roads being built to provide its citizens with basic dignities and a quality of life that we are supposed to have better that alot of countries in this world.

hes right though, the purpose of life isn't to buy a house, whats wrong with living life day by day, not being tied down to a mortgage, being able to move about were you want.

I know i don't want to live like this for much longer, the financial security that buying a house can give you, is something, which appeals to me but not everyone.

Me too, i don't want to be renting when i finally move out. I want somewhere that is mine, and mine alone...

would ratehr be pumping my well earned money into a mortgage than be renting.

when i get my own flat/house, im going to rent out the spare room/s and get a mortgage, payrise permitting.

me and paula are paying more in rent now than her parents mortgage payments... there is no way we're gonna be able to buy anywhere for the foreseeable future though.
