Quarantine. Watched this at work last night. I usually hate American remakes of foreign language films I love, especially horror films. Not once have the Yanks improved upon something they've remade. So with [REC] being one of my favorite films of the last year, I wasn't hopeful. But to be honest this remake is not that bad. However, if I hadn't of seen REC I'd probably have liked this more. It's pretty much a shot-for-shot remake of the original, although there are 3 or 4 scenes that are new to this version. One of the new scenes I liked, the other 3 were shit. I won't go in to spoilers but all i'll say is that the filmmakers here consciously make a decision te explain the cause of the outbreak, something they shied away from in REC (to the original films benefit I think). Also some of the subtle suggestions of the cause of the outbreak that are hinted at in the "fucked up room" at the end of REC are not present in this version. One of the things i love about REC was that that awesome last scene opened up a new avenue of possibility that let me as a viewer choose what i wanted to believe was the reason for the outbreak. The Americans seem to think that force feeding us the answer makes a better film. It doesn't. You can sum up the idiocy of American remakes by this films title alone. They've made a fundamental error in calling it "Quarantine", it actually spoils a massive element of the story in it's title alone, [REC] on the other hand was a completely anonymous title that in no way hinted towards any aspect of the story. If you "don't like films with subtitles" go and see it if you must, but the original is a far far superior film in my opinion and recommend you choose to watch that first. If I hadn't seen [REC] - 8/10 Because I'd seen [REC] - 5/10.
It was ok like but that main woman over used the dodgy panting towards the end. If she shut up i would of thought it was better.
Just been to see this. I think I would have also enjoyed it better if I hadn't seen [REC], which I watched recently and which scared the shit out of me as the bloke in the flat upstairs was making random noises (ok, he was probably just walking). Still thought it was quite a good remake (compared to some of the butchering done by Americans to perfectly good films) but for me the foreign language/subtitling works well in horror films so I preferred the original.
