Read this u muppets! I accept your thanks in advance! Any free entry or drinks for the future will be accepted graciousley! EPIC! - The only way to describe Promise! Having been a Promise regular since it opened in 1999 I’ve seen it through times good and bad. From trance to an almost crippling progressive spell Promise has seen it through to become an epic Friday night in Newcastle. It is honestly the only place to be at the weekend. As one of the original Promise punters I’ll agree I’m biased as to the quality of the crowd, but make a visit and you’ll see I’m right. There's a fantastic mix of people and you’ll always be made to feel welcome. Meet one of the regulars and suddenly you’ll know the whole club with people saying Hi left, right and centre! The dress code is ‘fridays best’ which is loosely translated into ‘anything goes’, come as an eighties style trendy, in full on cyber or even a bondage outfit and you wont feel out of place or get odd looks. Everyone is there for the same reason, to have an amazing time, in a stylish club, with a great music policy. House and Trance are on the menu and available in bucket loads, Promise as seen the cream of the DJ world grace its decks over the last two years, providing huge nights. Promise also prides itself on its commitment to its regulars/members and is always keen to get input and feedback via its message board (promisealways.com), the most notable outcome being a booking and eventual residency of Eddie Halliwell after much begging from us! So, onto the re-opening, with Corvin Dalek and John Kelly to play it was already going to be great, but to add to that masterpiece Promise has spent £150,000 sprucing the club up and everyone was keen to see the result. The night started at a local pub called Egypt Cottage which is currently hosting the Promise DJ competition, the main prize being a slot to play on the hallowed Friday night. Time to meet up with all the familiar faces, and a whole host of new ones! Having been away all summer there was a lot for me to catch up on! Come 10pm it was time to walk down to Foundation and begin proper the weekly pilgrimage! The queue was round the building but moving fast, as always the security where present but friendly, a quick visit to the cloakroom and it was time to see what all that money had been spent on. At first sight it doesn’t seen to have changed much, but why change a good thing right!? On a second glance we see the seating and tables have been updated, as has the bar. Another new addition are the screens mounted up above the DJ booth providing stunning visuals. At the front of the dance floor the DJ booth has been raised even higher, this I can only think was due to people knocking the needle trying to reach over the 6ft front to shake the DJ’s hand. Not possible now as even the ledge you had to stand on before is gone! Backstage, new lights, equipment and a plush VIP room have been added. Its upstairs that the real difference can be seen, there are still plenty of lush seats to lounge in but the dance floor has been made bigger, and the décor updated. A new booth makes more of the Always room, giving it and its DJ’s the recognition they deserve for practically being a club within a club. Playing US house to a good-looking crowd. Starting our night off was the much-loved Richard Tulip setting us up for the wet&hard set we were to be provided by Corvin Dalek who didn’t disappoint. No one was more pleased than me when Corvin blinded us with a thumping set, not having enjoyed it last time he played. I was proved wrong and have to admit this man is a genius. Huge tunes pounded through the clubs system making fantastic use of the floor to ceiling speakers at either side of the booth. The atmosphere was electric, and you could tell from the faces in the crowd that everyone was having a night of their lives. It was coming up to two o’clock and the excitement was building for the arrival of John Kelly, who’s always been one of my personal favourites and not a man to disappoint a crowd. Unfortunately it was a late arrival due to illness but he still managed to take charge of the decks for the last hour or so. With big tunes and a thumping bass beat Kelly took us through to the end leaving us begging for more. But alas it all had to end as the lights came up, and a dishevelled but happy crowd was revealed. All in all an excellent night from what is now an established night with a faithful following. At a time when many clubs seem to be downgrading or perhaps not doing as well as they should, Promise is thriving and looks set to do so for a long time to come! Like I said … epic!
