    producing

i meant the good ear for music bit

just play and play and play with the gear/software until it makes a noise that you like. Add that to a bit of expert advice every so often and you'll be making neighbour annoying noise in no time

i reckon the hardest thing about making music is the battle against your own patience

Reason is a good place to start imo because it teaches you a bit about everthing (due to the amount of inbuilt fx/synths etc) without having to get bogged down with millions of plugins.

Theres some really good guides to things like Compression, EQ and Reverb etc on the Sound On Sound website....ive learnt so much by reading articles in magazine like SOS, Future Music etc etc
