Open Explorer or My Computer, click tools and 'folder options' ... might be different in ME... but it's around there somewhere... then look for the 'File Types' tab... folders should be near the top - check what it's set to - it should be 'none' i think...

While that may be the case it doesn't really solve the current problem

Never seen that before so I have no idea

If you try Start > Run and paste in the file path does it still happen or can you open the folder?

Try going to Start-->Run, type "regedit", navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
and see if there's a key called "DesktopProcess" - if thre is, delete it. Only seen that on old versions of Windows though, unsure about ME, so unsure it will work.

All> I cannot open ANY folder without the prompt appearing. This includes folders on the desktop and shortcuts to folders on my drives. ........BUT shortcouts to documents and spreadsheets that are stored in these folders open fine?!?!

Did you get into regedit fine and delete that key if it was there?

i'm not one to bad mouth stuff - but ME is meant to be shite. just a stop gap hash up between 98/2K/XP... loads of bother with it... but i suppose if you're only using it for browsing your fetish sites and for book keeping 'teknofish independant traders' - it does the job for you
