    Port Forwarding

We've got a new wireless router in our house (too much alcohol broke the last one!) and we've set it up but I can't get port forwarding to work for utorrent anymore.

    It's a D-Link DSL 924 which isn't listed anywhere helpful online but it's comparable to a DSL G624T apparently.

I've created the rule for it but it still says it's not forwarded when I check with the thing in Utorrent.

Any of you lovely geeky people have any ideas why? (I'm hopeless at explaining things, sorry)

are you sure its the router thats causing the problem, do you have a firewall?

I heard that sky broadband have blocked torrents from being downloaded on their service somehow, maybe the router is set to block them too?

I'm using Kaspersky, but it's the same with that disabled :(

The status icon at the bottom in Utorrent is red and says "A firewall/router is limiting your network traffic"

I've obviously set it up wrong somewhere :(

thats bullshit, its not illegal to download torrents, its the content thats illegal, you can use them for legal purposes so therefore they can't block the process.

    Name Utorent
    Protocol TCP, UDP
    Port Start 10423
    Port End 10423
    Port Map 10423

I've just realised it doesn't say Port Forwarding anymore  Before when I did it all the Virtual Network bit would change to "Port Forwarding" when I was creating the rule

no virtual servers is what you want, however it doesn't have anywhere to input your pcs ip address, which may be the problem, because each pc on your network will have a different private ip.

infact the port map will be your pcs ip i think, ou need to input it in there

Most modern routers can be configured automatically by your torrent software of choice (well uTorrent does).

Try switching on universal plug and play on the router.

I use this because uTorrent randomly picks a new port each time I switch it on so it saves me messing around updating the router config.

    Good luck Claire. :)

they can block whatever content they want if they feel like it, some forms of torrent may be legal but all forms generate large amounts of traffic and some ISPs may see fit to block it.

just because it's legal doesn't mean they don't like it ;)

Thanks, I think there is a problem with the router. The ADSL connection randomly drops and we can't connect to it at all until it is turned off and back on:confused: I thought it was advised to leave them on all the time.

I've seen a few routers that get nailed by downloading torrents. As i understand it P2P puts a far greater load on a router's NAT than any other type of traffic and it would appear that sometimes can result in all traffic slowing dramatically (even if you turn off the torrent application).

I'd check to see if there are any firmware updates for the router, mine is much better since I applied updates, I only have to restart it once every couple of weeks now.

Alex makes a good point about the Port Map (although bloody daft terminonlogy if it's right!)

    Check the routers help files.

For some reason the settings weren't being saved for the IP's.

Reset it and turned on UPnP and it seems to be working. The ADSL dropping seems to have corrected itself for now

    Thankyou
