Plane overshoots runway at Newcastle Airport

As the subject says...... an RAF Tornado this afternoon over-shot the runway during an emergency landing

This I know as Im currently stuck at Bristol waiting to fly back but so far, the runway is still closed

    Cant those things fly vertically?

Why didnt the (probably southern) pilot just hover and plonk it down?

I don't know if they can or not, but maybe the emergency landing had something to do with it?

    Indeed.

I'd say that flying vertically and hovering were different things, even if the plane can do both....

I knew there was something up at the airport, I was in Kingston Park at 5-6ish and saw a few planes quite low down in the sky, but flying away from the airport....

Then it came on the radio that the runway was closed but the planes couldnt divert to Durham either for some reason??

My mates were due back from Aiya Napa today aswell, haha UNLUCKY!

LONDON: Newcastle Airport says a Royal Air Force jet overshot its runway after hitting a bird in midair.

Airport spokeswoman Wendy Dawley says the Tornado fighter jet made an unscheduled landing Tuesday afternoon after hitting the bird. She says the pilot and one other person on board were unharmed.

Dawley says flights to Newcastle are being diverted and the plane remains in the grass on the far side of the runway. Newcastle is 280 miles (450 kilometers) north of London.

Dawley says authorities do not know what type of bird the jet hit.

If that bird survived he'll be telling all his mates what he's done.

    What a fucking nightmare!

Due to fly at 6.30, delayed for 2 hours, gets on plane at 8.30pm, engines start, 1 minute later, engines go off and we get towed to a remote standing bay where we had to sit on the plane for a further 2 hours before we could take off!!!

There was some right wingey bastards on the plane man, cant see why, its not like complaining is gonna get them home any quicker. Not like the plane crashed on purpose man

This is the third time i've ever used wikipedia, the second was above.

Arielle is a pioneering bird demonstrating that the cliché “Parrots just imitate what they hear” is erroneous. Arielle, a Blue-and-yellow Macaw communicates ideas using a vocabulary of 4000 meaningful expressions. She speaks in several tenses, uses pronouns appropriately, attributes characteristics to animals and objects, and generally uses English correctly—she demonstrates a “Theory of Mind.” A book, based on recordings of her free speech documents many aspects of the macaw’s linguistic abilities.
