    picking your career

right, im having a little trouble ay the moment trying to pick a university course that would suit me. i dont have many interests with things like this, so its difficult, can i ask you lot to tell me when you applied for uni what you did and why, and where that has got you. it would be a great help, im trawling the ucas website at the moment without joy, i dont really know if i would like to go.

so how did you pick your career??:D

Pick a degree that has something to do with what you will have the best chance of half enjoying... BUT.... remember its about getting a job at the end of it - so dont pick some obscure course for a laugh, then in 4 years time when you have a 15 grand debt to repay... you'll regret not being able to find a job, or being paid 9 grand a year for it.

    Thats my take.

i went and did a diploma in art after my a-levels, coz i didn't know what i wanted to do, but i knew it would be art based.

then at art collage i randomly chose teesside to do graphic design

now at the moment i'm applying for a PGCE at leeds uni

its just a progression, no one is really certain:)

i think overall i would want to be someone who works with people all the time, like presenting or a receptionist even. i like people, and having a laugh. any suggestions? :cool2:

I took a job at T-Mobile as a CS advisor, moved to the technical support team, then to the mobile data support team, then off to a rather interesting job that I can't really be arsed to explain what I do.

    It pay's well though :D

I picked something I've always loved doing and that's writing. I always loved English at school too and I always wanted to be a journalist really. Hence I did a degree and a masters in journalism and online journalism. The trouble now is finding a job......

I picked a degree which wouldn't limit my opportunities once I graduated. There's plenty of courses out there which are very specialised, but unless you are positive thats the route you want to go down and dedicate your life to, I would go for a course which has abit of everything in it so you have more choices once you leave.

Ask for the course breakdown of courses that take your fancy, it should give you a year by year syllabus of what you would learn from the course.

Some universities have specialist centres, Sheffield is good for Medicine. Oxford - Maths, LSE - Business/Law. Liverpool - Arts etc Go where the best resources are.

Go for a course that can give you an industrial placement which you do after your 2nd year and before your final year. These are called sandwich courses. With industry experience under your belt, you fair a better chance of a job once you graduate, maybe with the place you did your placement at.

i'm halfway through uni for the 2nd time. i made the mistake of going to uni and doing a course i was only half interested in.

eventually i realised this and packed it after my 1st year, moved back home and went to my local uni to do law. i now couldn't be more happy with my career direction, love my course even though the uni isn't amazing.

if you are seriously interested in studying for certain career then by all means choose a career linked degree, however i would definately advise against going down this route unless you are at least 90% certain you want to work in that industry. uni can get expensive very quickly! ;)
