Phoning a mobile in South Africa

Does anyone know what country codes I'd have to use? I've hardly been able to speak to my m8 over there because it never lets me call. +44 is the number to call for our country, but is there a number to use for calling out? and then I'm guessing there's also one for africa. +02 is the prefix on the number he's sent txt's with.

Nice one i'll give it a try :)

Anyone used this (or similar) service before? I've just stumbled upon it. http://www.dialtosave.co.uk/international/how.php

Apparently you can call internation numbers for free from your mobile using your inclusive monthly minutes. That link describes the process in a bit more detail. Not sure if it allows calls to mobiles though.

ah this still isn't recognized as a number. I've checked the BT site, and it says to call from the UK to SA, you need 0027. That also doesn't work :(

That wasnt very clear, if the code is 0027 and his number is 07940123123 then ring 00277940123123

Yep, I tried this. I'm aware of how the +44 prefix is for calling numbers in the UK, and the first digit of the mobile number is missed off but I can't seem to get anything to work . What does the "+" do? calling without it results in a beep-beep line dead signal. Calling with the "+" gives me a number not recognized.

Rob, any idea what +02 is for? this is from the number he text me from and it doesnt work for a reply. According to the BT site (and Craig_M - cheers ) the code for calling africa is +27. 0027 if calling from the UK so I'm guessing that the UK dial-out code is 00?

By the way, you don't always have to drop off the first digit after the dialling code either. Depends on the country.

yeah, it's mainly the UK that always has a leading zero, which isn't needed.

arn't you supposed to wait a few seconds after pressing 00?

Type the number slower see if that makes any difference.

I've had to ring the US and Spain a few times at work for certain tech support and it always works

I'm calling with a saved number each time as oppossed to entering each digit manually every time... I'll give it a go without missing the first digit off though. My m8 moved over to SA in September so he'll be using a SA phone I'd imagine.

French William - the number after the 2 is 7. Unless the SA mobile numbers are a digit shorter than ours, the 02 replaced the first number which i'm guessing is the 0.

edit: 0027 followed by the whole number including the 0 at the start doesnt work. Line dead signal :( The little bastard said he was planning on coming back over here for Global Gathering so I'd love to get this figured out lol. Maybe O2 can help me.

oh good lord. I phoned O2 and they had an international block on ym phone even though I signed up for "cheaper international calls" when I bought my phone. WHat a fuck on. I'll try again in a few hours when the service should be available :dunce:

There not a landline you can call from somewhere? A mobile to mobile call with a saffa's gonna kill your bill.

30p per minute, 12p per text. I can live with that. I'd only be on for a few minutes to find out what he's upto and whether he's gonna be sorted in time for Global.

The link I posted in my first or 2nd post is interesting too. You phone the number on the site, then enter the number you're gonna call to abroad and it costs national rate/comes out of your inclusive minutes. Only thing is, I dunno if it's gonna work for mobiles.

It's not a calling card as such.

There's a list of compatible UK networks, stating whether the call will come out of your monthly minutes or not.
