People who own/know about 'dvd/xvid/divx' players..

I'm thinking about buying my dad one of these for christmas as the dvd player we use downstairs is crap and i have some videos in avi format that can only be watched on the pc.

What is the compatibility like with these xvid/divx players? Do they play all .avi movies or do they have problems with some films because of the various audio/video codecs used like you often get in windows media player? Secondly, are there different types of players? I've had a look around and it seems some only state that they are 'xvid' or 'divx' players. I'd want a player that plays both.

Ive got a cheapo one - Its really handy although the one thing it seems to have problems playing is UK retail dvd's! .... Everything else (downloaded, copied, region 1 etc) plays perfectly well.

at 30 quid i cant complain, but it probably because it was one of the cheapest you could get at the time.

    Well worth getting tho.
