PC wont turn on - PSU? Purvy's PC is knackered again! And muggins has the task of fixing it as usual Anyway, symptoms are: You turn it on, and nowt happens. If you leave it for a bit, you get about 2 seconds of power and then nowt - this happens on a lot of electrical devices, so I presume it's just the machines capacitors. Anyway - I have said that it's probably the PSU - but i'd rather get a second opinion before i get him to buy a new one. I presume it's not another hardware fault, as you would at least get to the initial screens and then get a critital error message or something along those lines. Thoughts? I've not replaced a PSU before, is it difficult to do? How do I know which one to get? Cheers!
unplug EVERYTHING from the motherboard - just leave the main connection to the PSU. Sometimes the motherboards can make them act weird. Otherwise - new PSU - 4 screws - piece of piss. MAKE SURE ITS GOT THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS (P4, etc)
i once built a machine and it wouldnt turn on. i was tearing my hair out out for weeks trying to find out what it was. i tried everything but couldnt get it to turn on. (it would fire for half a second then shut down). it turned out i hadnt put the washers on the screws that attach the mobo to the case and the elec current was traveling thru the mobo in into the case and stopping the machine turning on. how fucking mad is that?! four little washers!!
Also - brand new motherboards (or this is how it used to be) used to have a jumper set for clear CMOS - you had to remove this to get them to work...
