    PC Problem....

    Heres the problem,
Firstly when its been switched off for awhile and switch it on again the power comes on, but it takes about 1min or so for the BIOS to start, and then when it does start as soon as the PC starts to boot it just reboots its self.

Im thinking 3 things, Power supply, Motherboard or BIOS Battery.

Power supply maybe faulty and distributing correct supply to the motherboard. The Bios battery could be on its way out or Basicaly the motherboards shagged.

Havent had a look at it yet so if anyones got any other ideas they would be appricated

    cheers

I would try and reset your cmos mate !

Do so by changing the jumpers and pressing the power on, it wont switch on so change them back to their original setting and press power again.

That should work fine, will probs say that the cmos battery is low.

If that dont work i would get a new battery :D

If its not this then i would try a new power pack as you say :D

    Ive tried practically everything.....

Replaced BIOS battery, hard drive, VGA Card, Power Supply.....

none of those are causing the problem

Look as though its either the board or the Processor

    bollocks!

so you cant get the machine on at all? that rules out the proc over heating if so...

i had a problem like this before but the PC would not even start, it would beep and the fans would go on but that was it.

It turned out to be because a couple of washers that seperate the Mobo from the steel case had come loose & the Mobo was "circuting" trought the whole case!!! the electricity was going thru the Mobo striahgt around the case!!! all becasue of these tiny washers that go round the mobo screws!! it can be that tiny!!

If it is your Mother Board they are CHEAP to replace.

Lend a friends RAM and try this in yours...... if that fails get a new Mobo.

The system starts, it just takes about a minute before the BIOS kicks in when its been switched off awhile. Then reboots its self randomly when booting...

Gona try re-seating the motherboard see if that helps

If it all works sometimes then prob nothing is wrong with the hardware.

When you've got the MoBo out, check all the connections and give it a good clean, esp round the air-holes

It never fully boots, when first switched on it boots till it loads the DMI and then reboots, if i leave it for a bit in the cycle of booting and then rebooting it can sometimes gets to loading Windows but then reboots itself. Its not software cos i tested with another harddrive and it does the same

    Sounds pretty ill to me.

Prob best to get all your data off, then zap it from scratch, i.e. fdisk it, then put XP on

hmm... i cant really offer anythin more than what has been said... but i am going to hijack ur thread - i built a comp for a m8 about 2 weeks back, however there seems to be a problem - it keeps crashing, or re-setting itself - it keeps gettin activex errors - i figured it may have been a dodgy windows install, so i totally formatted, n put xp on... and it does exactly the same thing

I really cant think what would make it do this, it seems to work, but as soon as you give it anythin graphical - bang it resets or crashes.

hopefully one of u might have an idea... cos i fukkin dont

if not im just gonna strip the whole thing down n build it again... on the off chance i did something wrong...

Spud, it's most likely you aint got the proper (i.e. XP) drivers for something - prob the graphics card!

Get on-line and DL the most up-to-date drivers for everything. If you've done that then

yea... i know xp has drivers in it for the card (geforce 4) but i do remember tellin him not to bother downloading the newest drivers for it (cos i couldnt be arsed) i'll give that a go :)

if anyone else knows anything else, let me know, i'll try anything atm...

Pete, maybe you could try flashing the bios or DL all new drivers?

I have no idea how to flash a BIOS tho, but I bet Rob does, he's dead clever

definately not a software prob Kid, defo hardware. Strip it down. Make sure the motherboard boots without the processor or memory in - see if it boots a different way (i.e. no delay) then put the processor in - try again. Then memory. Try again. You should be able to work out what the problem is but it sounds like the motherboard is chuffed. Try a BIOS update. Failing that - new motherboards are only like £50. i just got a new motherboard, loads of onboard stuff, AMD XP 2.2 processor, heatsink and fan for £120 brand new. Sweet.
