Owen came out about 3 weeks ago and ruled out any move to newcastle as he wants to sign for a club who are in europe and will be challenging for it again this season

yea he did, but he came out last night and said

""I met the Real Madrid president before last night's friendly at the Bernabeu and we discussed my future," said Owen.

"I said that my ideal situation was to start the season in the Real Madrid team and if not I would prefer to return to Liverpool.

"The president understood and said he would try to help me achieve this.

"If the transfer cannot be finalised in time I have agreed to go to Newcastle United but only on a one-year loan. I need to be playing regularly in a World Cup year."

i still think liverpoool will sign him, rafa's bluffin

I agree with you on this. He belongs at Liverpool, I never thought he'd leave in all honesty.
Saying that I hope they don't sign him coz the way this is going we'll be challenging Sunderland for low points in a dogfight unless we sign someone who knows how to score :(

Newcastle United have agreed a club record fee with Real Madrid for England striker Michael Owen.

The Magpies are determined to bring the former Liverpool forward to St James' Park even though he has expressed a preference for returning to Anfield.

Owen has indicated he would only join Newcastle on loan but the club have agreed terms with Real, a club they are used to doing business with after selling Jonathan Woodgate to the Spanish giants.

The striker seems certain to move on from the Bernabeu this summer, following crunch talks with Real president Florentino Perez on Tuesday, and he admitted it would likely be a straight fight between Liverpool and Newcastle for his signature.

The England forward suggested his preferred choice was to head to Liverpool, adding he would only consider a loan move to St James' Park in what is a World Cup year.

However, these comments have not deterred Newcastle who have announced they have agreed a club-record fee with Real for the striker.

"Newcastle United have met Real Madrid's asking price and conditions," a statement on the club's website read.

"The agreed fee will be a record transfer fee for Newcastle United.

"It is now up to the player and his advisor."

Much will now depend on whether Magpies chief Graeme Souness can persuade the 25-year-old to pledge his future to Newcastle.

yep, cant see him signing a 3-5 year deal, which is what they will want him to sign.

to be honest a loan deal is better for a player who by the sound of it doesnt really want to play for us

    I hope its just a season-long loan.

Not because i dont rate him, because i do think hes a very good player. But it does just smack of another Fad Fred 'trophy' signing. I can see him chuckling in his big office '"hehe those thick geordies have fallen for another one".

We need several good players, rather than blowing a club record on one player. Not to mention the kind of wages he will be on. Real Madrid arent excatly known for paying in peanuts.
