Just sounds fucked. Uninstall/re-install office is the easiest.

If I do that will I lose all of the mail in the folders??

You can save them.... if it's xp, you'll need to make sure all folders are shown (inc hidden ones) THEN it'll be a file with either a .PST or .OST extention in either of these folders :

    C:\documents and settings\<user>\local settings\microsoft\outlook\

    or

    C:\documents and settings\<user>\application data\local settings\microsoft\outlook\

Back those 2 folders up - HOWEVER it shouldn't delete them anyway when u uninstall - but it's worth being safe than sorry!

POP3 still retrieves mail remotely though doesnt it??

For example if you set up outlook with Hotmail, if you delete outlook you dont lose your hotmail email...

Im sure on my old freeserve crapper email account when i got a new PC i still had all my emails.

    Hmm :p

Hotmail is web based, it has the function to download your emails locally using POP3 protocol - BUT it still holds them in Hotmail, hence why u can access mail from anywhere.

Standard 'pay as u go' style dial up services like Freeserve, Freeola, btconnect, etc (which i know Lister used to use ;) ) retrieves mail from the mail server and stores it locally. Otherwise each time u checked for mail, it'd always be in your inbox and outlook will bring it down. Once it's download, it says 'deleteing mail from server' - it stores it in a .OST (for early office versions i think) and .PST for personal folder in later versions... can't remember which way round it is...

Hence if u flatten your machine and haven't backed up your documents and settings folder, you'll lose previous data stores within Outlook - (in.c contacts/notes/calendar)

IF however it's like Hotmail - you can STILL access your emails while online away from your machine - then yes, it will keep them on line - but not all ISP's have this solution

I've uninstalled/reinstalled outlook and it is still playing up......I've found the outlook pst file and also the archive file (the archive file only seems to have sent items in as I can open that one). I can't open or transfer the big outlook file with everything in everytime I try I get, "Cannot copy outlook. The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file" BUT I don't have anything else running. This means I can't bounce the email across to Mozilla Thunderbird.

    Any help, greatly appreciated.

Looks like it might be stuffed - possibly the reason it was making Outlook crash.

I've just been googling for that error message and there's a few people had it, but no-one really had a fix for it. So try :

    1) CTRL-ALT-DEL - check in task manager, make sure there's no instances of Outlook running in there, causing the file to be locked.

    2) Try this file unlocker : http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Unlocker.shtml see if that frees it... i don't think it will though...

    3) Try the Microsoft Inbox Repair Tool : http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010549311033.aspx

    4) Delete the file, go get a cup of tea, a hob nob and watch ''Takeshi's Castle' - you'll need cheering watching japs hurt themselfs as the file is buggered. Just pity it wasn't dirty frenchmen hurting themselves.
