I thought there'd be many more exclusive & original titles for launch... there's only a few on that list

I've got most f them already on PC / console. Shame cos they'll be nowhere near as good as on PC.

no where as good as on pc are you joking? the xbox 360 has three times the power of the fastest home computer on the market at the moment. It'll be a lot better on the 360 than pc

For a start, the contols are be miles better on a pc except for driving games and maybe football games like someone above said. FPS are way better with a keyb & mouse.

I don't have HDTV (yet) so the graphics on the xbox will be nowhere near as visibly good as on my PC with my 7800GTX at 1600 x 1200

Since nearly all of the release games will be ports from pc or other console, very few of them will come close to using the full power of the 360, the console ports will have the graphics tidied up and the pc ports will be very similar.

I haven't said that the games will never be better, I just said that the launch games won't be.

    I'm with this guy..

Majority of what you hear at a console launch are just numbers used to confuse mr customer into buying the console.

    A PC with a X2 4800+, 2GB 4400 1T RAM with decent steppings and either 2 7800GTXs or 2 512 7800 GTXs in SLI will kick the 360s arse.

That said the price of the PC will be nearly 4 times that of the 360... but games at 1600 x 1200 or even 1920 x 1280 with 16x aa and 16x af will look and play fucking brilliant.

The other thing to note is that majority of the launch games, with the exclusion of PGR3, don't have aa or af.. making them, IMO, inferior from the off..

You don't need that kind of graphics cards to beat the 360...

The lead designer on the PS3 said that it will have the same graphic's processing power as 2 Geforce 6800s (high end a few months back but now very affordable ;))

Any decent PC with that kind of setup could quite happily run rings round either console.

i thought playstation said the ps3 will have ten times the power of the fast home computer not two times,

and xbox said theres will be three times more processing power.

Thats all just a load of marketing hype. The truth is that the PS3's RSX chip is based on a the GTX version of the Geforce 7800, making it as powerful (within a couple of frames per second) as a PC running the 6800's in SLi. SLi is far from a perfect platform either, they're still tweaking it... It was the same with the original Xbox when it was released, Microsoft were hyping it as twice as fast as the average PC, when it came out it was nowhere near...

The processors for Xbox360 and PS3 may be multi-core, but that doesn't mean much... With PC games far more depends on the GPU in use (graphics cards and their processors on average have 3 times more transistors per square mm than the average high-end CPU), and I'd imagine it'll be the same for the two consoles.

What I find ironic is the fact that both developers have enlisted the help of PC chip makers to put the things together (Microsoft with ATi, Sony with Nvidia) and the architectures of both consoles have far more in common with PCs than you realise...

I meant the processor not the graphics chip you could run a game that needs 256mb graphics card on 56mb graphics card if you had enough processing power to combat the lack of graphics processing.

    Thats a load of bullshit.

The memory on the card is used for textures and gpu processing, and if there is enough memory present on the gfx card all of the data can be processed on the card without involving the CPU.

Storing it in RAM (which is usually slower than the GPU's memory btw) involves a huge delay (and a performance hit) as the information is moved onto the graphics card. Graphics work is always faster done in hardware (on the card) than software (on the processor). Thats why graphics cards came about to start with.

I've got two radeon 9600's, both identical chips, apart from the fact one with 128mb and one with 256mb, and I've played Doom3 and Quake4 with both. Take a wild guess which one is quicker ;)

I don't know where to start...

If you tried to run doom 3 or any other intensive action game, which is likely to be the sort of game the consoles were "designed for", on a 56MB card and a 256Mb card you would note the difference..

In PC gaming, in FPS inparticular, the RAM on the GC is used to store textures etc and the CPU is used to process physics, lighting and particle effects etc..

If you do not have enough RAM to store all textures used in a scene then the texture data will spill over into the system RAM. This will create a delay as the textures will either have to be loaded from the system RAM or loaded into GC RAM when required. Obviously this will create delays.

You could have Dual 40Ghz Quad Core Intel Pentium 7 with HT system (16 Processing Units) and a 64MB GF 6800GT (if there was such a thing) and Doom 3 still wouldn't shift very fast.. due to the texture size and memory required.

At the end of the day the 360 will be a massive step in home entertainment.. but only for those who do not have the knowledge required to build a decent PC.
