    Is it just me...

Call me an old war horse who shoots from the hip, but is it not blatantly obvious, that zero exercise, lard, beer, smokes, boat loads of sugar, buckets of salt, couch potato culture, home computer gaming and more lard equals a very unhealthy life style.

Or am I being picky with this notion?

The government and media have this massive over emphasis on the health of the nation right now... you can hardly go a week without breakfast TV covering some kind of story about this, complete with library videos of peoples fat arses and huge bellies.... while the government does its usual "tut tut, we must get healthy" bullshit.

How about the government start acting like a government and do something about this... How about subsidising gyms so people dont have to shell out tons of cash to get healthy and do exercise once they leave school - which, lets admit gets very difficult to do once you have a job/committments etc etc.

Also, its no wonder our kids are getting fat when our education spends 99% of its time teaching us to pass exams - how about we skip a few subjects we DONT FUCKING NEED and bring P.E. back into the curriculum so people are doing some kind of exercise 2-3-4 times a week...

How about taxing unhealthy food, and UN-taxing healthy food. Take the VAT off food which falls within certain criteria and make it affordable. I know its alot cheaper to go to iceland and get one of their huge 5 pound deals, than it is to buy some green beans, asparagus and some quality meat say.... No wonder people turn to a 10 pack of crispy pancakes cause its too fucking expensive to be healthy.

Lastly, the government gives us all grief about getting unhealthy while they allow cigarettes, alcohol and pork scratchings to be sold.... while the worst kind of guff is advertised to kids on tv from an early age - Watch saturday morning TV if you want to see what kind of SHIT they are trying to push on people.

Yeah its a whole load of blame on the government, but do you blame people for getting into a state when all this crud is just dangled in front of us 24x7....

Can't see anything changing, the companies will not want their profits to drop, there's too much money involved. No doubt the Gov will launch a PR "Initiative" to combat the bad press, then it will be yesterdays news...

    Scenario...

I suppose when obese babies are being born and obese police officers cant fit into patrol cars to chase criminals, perhaps then Emperor Blair might do something.

This will probably be in the form of 'consultancy' period, to see what the problem is and what causes it.

After that, perhaps random witch hunt style court room dramas featuring Ronald, The Colonel and Captain Birdseye?

Has anyone noticed that the children, depicted in KFC wall murals, are always fat?

    Social engineering at its best.

Not true! If people bothered their arses to go to places like Grainger Market, they could get boat loads of fresh fruit and veg for next to nothing! Plus, if you eat less, you can afford to eat more healthily.

I find it very frightening to know that two-thirds of the adult population of the UK is either overweight or obese. Talk about a strain on the NHS.

Yeah its easy to go around the grangier market - but not everyone lives or works near that..... I'm about 300 miles away from the grainger market and after work the markets are all shut anyways so we dont have the chance to pick up food like that for cheap.... i agree that its possible to do it for cheap - but we need some kind of change in the system to actually put a dent in the problem.

Which is why I said places like the Grainger Market! Most people will be able to get to somewhere similar without too many problems. Shut after work? Then go on a lunch break or weekend.

We accuse the government of becoming more like a nanny state, then expect it to do everything for us.

Yeah well you have to ask the question... how have things changed from 50 years ago when we simply didnt have this problem at all.

Yes times have changed and the nation doesnt need the kind of back breaking physical labour and other things which kept people in good health... but as the whole junk food industry moved in, and we realised how much of an impact it was having on people say in America at the end of the 70's - we sat back and did nothing.

The world has changed and we need initiatives to make getting healthier and fitter more desireable,... at the moment its something that the masses simply cant do without some kind of emphasis or pressure to actually do.

Yeah - i know exactly how to eat healthily, and i go to the gym 6-7 times a week but i can see exactly why so many people cant or choose not to.

Its quite ironic that the government peddles alcohol, cigarettes and junk food to us all in copious quantities - and quite happily taxes us handsomely for them all.

BUT!!!!!! WHen people get sick, ill, or otherwise screwed up because of these - the same governments then tell us its our own problem that we need to sort out for ourselves.

    LAME.

I think you'll find it is the companies that sell alcohol, cigarettes and junk food, not the government. Yes, the government taxes them, but, given the high taxes on alcohol and cigarettes, does the government not act in a round-about way to make sure we can't afford to drink and smoke as much as we might otherwise? Blaming the government is a cop-out. Individual people are responsible for what they put in their mouths, no-one else.

Personally, I find my own health enough of an incentive not to get seriously overweight. Why should the government have to incentivise eating healthily? People should take responsibility for their own actions. It seems that the good old US blame culture is becoming more and more entrenched in our society.

i like how no1's actually talked about obesity on this thread, just the lifestyle that society associates with it!

obesity is a recogniged disease, with risk factors, signs and symptoms, not a pattern of behaviours...

one third of the determination of body weight can be accounted for by genetic factors, so its not always just cos fatty ate too much, it was all junk food an they only get off there arses to go to the toilet.

it is scary tho... thinking that prevalence has increased by 15% in the last 20 years, an in children its increased by more than 3x in the same period, an now about 10% of all 10-11 year olds are obese... not just a bit overweight, thats clinically obese!

the government has recently introducted the national healthy scholl initiative, whilst cutting the amount of time available for pe...

its shocking how 25% of all people are still not achieving the WHO recommended amount of the accumulation of 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most, prefrable all days of the week...

an moderate intensity activity is just walking fast!

Tax energy dense foods, then they can pay for the extra strain on the NHS which is only gonna get worse in the future
