    Because we earn more.

To be honest, it's only really accommodation that costs significantly more.

What a load eh .... maybe the reason why alot of these places are 'beyond hope' (as THEY are saying, not me) is that the old industries that originally grew these regions into what they are ..... all left or died off for whatever reason.

The SE is way overcrowded as is - I feel sorry for anyone who has to commute in and around London for any distance cause its a nightmare. And property prices are a rip off for a vastly lower quality of life.

.... The solution is to make the north a better place to live by encouraging industry to actually set up shop there, rather than ship out everything abroad or down south.

Totally agree. I've been lucky enough to be able to afford a house in zone 2, mostly thanks to buying my first house in Newcastle about 10 years ago. I'd hate to come down here with the prospect of never being able to buy my own place, unless it was either in a hideous area or 20 miles out.

I wouldn't read into this too much tbh, it's written by a right-wing think tank and its contributors obviously haven't travelled north of Watford Gap in their entire lives.

There's more to the UK than London and "the saarf" ;)
