boro 7th, not bad... i'd take these kind of surveys with a huge pinch of salt. they don't really prove anything.

all seater stadiums, stewards and music have all contributed to poorer atmospheres in the premiership. Although the pricing out of working class fans and influx of a new breed of fans has also been a major player.

I'm suprised we are top, I've only been to three home games this season but it seems much quieter than when I had my season ticket a few year back, saying that I used to sit in the southwest but nowadays just have to sit where nobody else wants to

Thing is if they're measuring sound like that the acoustics of the place and placement or wherever it was picked up will make a massive difference, newcastles stadium acoustic wise isn't great with it not being level.

Yeah its obviosuly not going to be to accurate, One side of a stadium can quite easily be twice as loud as the other side with most premiership teams having a stand which is more famous for its noise

Sunderland won because all of the noise is coming from the "what the fuck are you doing?" and "boooing"

it's simple enough, really - you price out the original nutters who used to make it so intimidating and replace them with more respectable sorts and the sounds levels inevitably drop.

on it's day st james can be awe inspiring but for mediocre games it's average, no better or worse than the other grounds around the league, thats for sure.

also - the more a set of fans have to cheer about - inevitably the more they will.

in recent seasons the optimism was replaced with almost a sense of dread at the seemingly inevitable capitulation!

things look better this season at home, at least. getting a sense of pride in the team will with time make things louder.

optimism + cheap tickets + good performance = impressive atmosphere.

the more of those things you take away, the lesser the atmosphere.

hell - i reckon if someone could be arsed you could probably do some calculation to put that theory to the test.

to be REALLY picky though, none of this factors in stuff like variance in sound levels around individual areas of stadiums, or indeed the individual design of the stadiums themselves and how that affects the sound level.

spot on spud, thats what happened with boro. now all the old holgate lads are watching the games on illegal channels in pubs with their mates and great atmospheres, where they can drink and smoke with relative ease.

even the ones who could afford it - why would they pay their hard-earned money to watch poor football in a sanitised atmosphere where they cant stand and cheer properly, or even sit with their mates most of the time. even if the football improves there is only the chance to pick up crumbs from the big 4's table.

the way football has become corporate and embraced money instead of fans has wrecked atmospheres, stadiums are as good as morgues half the time. i hope the bubble bursts as the premierleague is soulless.

It's got nowt to do with ticket prices. If your a big fan you'd go to the games regardless. It's hardly costing people thousands of pounds for a season ticket.

The reason the atmosphere is turd is because every season you win nothing. You do well and you're one of the best clubs in England but the fans have given up hope of ever winning anything.

The premier league is poor atmosphere wise in comparison to countries like italy and turkey etc, granted there are loads of nutters and hooligans in those countries but atleast there always looks to be a good atmosphere

what smog said is true - i still remember my old ticket when i first started going, i was surrounded by fucking maniacs and it was intimidating but fuck me, it had passion, i started going again a couple of seasons back and all the people around where i had used to sit were gone.

sure - my original post mentions the success factor, but if you go to one of the rough arsed bars with the hookey arabian tele channels, the chanting and roaring coming from inside the place confirmed to me where a lot of the people have went to!

    here we go again

Was it better in 1978? :p

have to agree mind, some Newcastle matches i've been to have had barely any noise at all. Gallowgate end and SJH stand seem the loudest in the few games i've actually been to

italy has awful attendances for massive games, it's partly the "ultras" that give some teams loud support.

whereas over here you aren't aloud to stand or a steward will escort you out. music is played at kick off and at goals as a form of crowd control. no wonder attendances are suffering.
