Sunderland were unlucky to lose to group leaders and local rivals Newcastle at the Academy of Light.

The home side created numerous chances but a mixture of good goalkeeping and poor finishing allowed Newcastle to leave with three points.

Sunderland were forced to use their two outfield substitutes David Dowson and Liam Connolly in the first half because of injuries to Sean Taylor and Peter Hartley.

So when Robbie Clarkson was forced out of the action in the second period, substitute goalkeeper Trevor Carson had to come on - as a striker!

The Black Cats started well with Craig McFarlane, Ian Graham and Jack Wanless all forcing terrific saves from Ben Smith in the early stages.

The best chance came in the 35th minute when Wanless side-footed wide of the keeper - only to shave the far post. Newcastle, too, had chances with Liam Atkin heading over from Marc Walton's cross.

Newcastle took the lead a minute into the second half. Ben Alnwick turned Craig Baxter'a shot round the post, but from the resulting corner Walton scored.

Sunderland responded well. Kevin Davidson saw his shot blocked after a good run and then Wanless drove over from a good position.

Ian Graham was unlucky when he crashed the ball against the bar with only the keeper to beat. The same player was brought down in the area soon after but the referee waved play on.

Sunderland should have been on level terms at this point but on 77 minutes it was the visitors who doubled their advantage when Carl Finnigan slid the ball past Alnwick.

Three minutes from time, Sunderland grabbed a consolation goal when full-back Luke Ball played a superb ball into the danger area before Graham converted from three yards.

Sunderland academy manager Ged McNamee said: "The injuries didn't help but we created lots of chances, with many one-on-ones - as well as hitting the bar. I was pleased with the team's attitude and overall display but if you don't put the chances away, you have problems."

Newcastle’s newly appointed academy director John Carver added: "It was a strange game - it could have ended 5-5."

Sunderland: Alnwick, Ball, Christensen, Hartley (Dowson 44), Taylor (Connolly 30), Davidson, Chandler, Clarkson (Carson 69), McFarlane, Wanless, Graham.

...on an adjacent pitch, United's superiority over the mackems was confirmed as we enjoyed a 5-1 success in the U16s game.
