    new pc

right.. ive got about £300 - £400 to spend on a new pc, i've just bought a nice bit 19" tft so dont need a monitor, same applies for the other peripherals..

im in a real quandary as to buy a ready made system like one off here or to buy in seperate parts and build it myself...

will it work out any cheaper? or can anyone reccomend anywhere else to go for one?

    chaz..

Building it yourself is usually the best way to do it, you can pick what you what and set it up accordingly.

But if you're on a budget and want a decent PC then Morgan may be worth a look (clicky ).

aye that looks ok for the money, what OS does it come with though? It says "N/A" on the spec :spangled:

Best place locally to buy PC's is Computer Orbit http://www.computerorbit.co.uk/ either get a pre-built base unit, or give em a spec and they'll build it for you

I built my pc and although it might work out a bit cheaper in some cases, and you can customize all the parts for what you need etc, when something goes tits up its so much hassle getting it sorted. Especially if you forgot to send the warranty off for every single component.

For example, my Radeon 9700 forked up a while back and when i contacted the supplier, i got told i ahd to contact the manufacturer. So I did. Following a few Emails to see if i could get it fixed or have a replacement i was told i had to package it appropriately and send it off to germany at which point they would sent it off to japan or some shit like that. Apart from the postage costs that i'd be responsible for I also had to include a cheque for 20 quid admin costs. Altogether it was going to cost me about 40 quid to get this thing replaced/repaired. God only knows what a monitor or something would have cost me if it had to go through the same process.

I managed to diagnose the problem as a buggy fan tho and my uncle got it sorted for me for nowt.

I'd personally prefer to get a custom built pc from dell or something so that any problems can be sorted directly by them. Unless you're a computer wizard i wouldnt really recommend buying everything seperate as it CAN cause big problems.

i always reckon Computer Orbit is best.... Go in with your budget, and spend where u want. i'd go for a P4, as higher spec as u can afford, 512mb ram should do the trick, get a nice motherboard, not the cheapest. Choose a nice case too... don't worry about getting it built - just get the parts - i'll do the rest if u want - OR see how much they charge to assemble it... it might be peanuts. Get a dvdwriter...

Forget software - i can sort that out cheap*

Keyboard and mouse can be bought online cheap ( a nice optical mouse + media keyboard for like £20) from somewhere like dabs.

    * cheap = nowt ;)

I was in there myself yesterday getting bits for the girlfriends PC, their prices are ok but watch out - they do try to get you to buy bits you don't necessarily need... :p

Gold Chip (http://www.goldchip-uk.com/) on the team valley estate are slightly cheaper with most bits, and their advice/support is really good. Worth a look if you can get.

computer orbit and especially gold chip are places i dealt with for many years, i strogly advise against using either of them.

the after sales is suspect as fuck and the gear is second rate shite on most accounts.

www.overclockers.co.uk is the way forward, and you dont have to leave the house to get your gear (usually delivered next day)

    my 2 cents
