    Network fucking faff on.

right. i havent a clue about network cables. i cannot say i am knowledgeable about the type. BUT.

my current cable that runs from my router to my PC is a bit shagged, its an ethernet cable.

is there another cable for networks that looks EXACTLY the same and fits the same connection - but at the same time not being the right cable? its got the same amount on pins and looks almost identical.

because the one i bought just isnt working at all. not that fussed cos it was a quid, but the connection is near on non existant with my old one.

theres ethernet cables then crossover cables that look the same, I think its an ethernet that you need for this and a crossover if your networking two pcs together

yep ethernet (straight through) cable is needed for pc > router.

Crossover cable for direct pc > pc

You can tell from the wiring order on the plug....

If the wiring order (colours is same on both ends its ethernet cable)

If they are opposite then its crossover cable! :computer:

actually, fully opposite is a rollover :p

iirc it's only 2 of the pairs that are different in a crossover

cheers for the help peeps. i've managed to sort of fix my old ethernet cable with the help of gaffa tape and some scissors - going to kick off with the bloke in the PC shop today.

however getting the crossover cable means i can connect the laptop now. wireless sucks.

I know nothing about networks either. Am I right to assume I need a network card of some kind in both of my pc's before i can connect them together with a crossover cable? They both have ethernet ports on the motherboard but maybe that's just access to a pci slot or something.

Also, if I connected the two pc's together, could I choose to connect to the internet on the one that doesn't have the (wired) modem attatched to it?

if they both have ethernet ports already, you should be able to just buy a crossover cable and then i think windows has a wizard for getting them connected

you can connect to the internet with one, then using the internet connection sharing wizard will get you using the internet through the main pc's connection

    :)

using internet connection sharing means that you need to have the pc which has the direct connection to the internet switched on for the other PC to get online.

To be honest, wired routers are so cheap these days it's hardly worth the faff of using crossover cables and ICS
