    net slow through new router

weve just installed a wifi adsl modem router...

connection is 54mb to my computer from the router, we have a 512kb connection, shit i know but till telewest connect us we have no choice... the net is basically snails pace on all the computers...

anyone any ideas what could be causing this + how I can fix it?

does the router not have a firewall on it?

check your network traffic - plug a cable into the back of it then into one of your computers, run ethereal to see how much traffic is going across the LAN (www.ethereal.com).

It's possible someone in the house is just leeching all the bandwidth.

theres no way he will understand ethereal to be fair!!

Thats a total geeks program :computer:

    Possibilites:

    - Someone is whoring all the bandwidth
    - Zone Alarm needs tweaking

    What was the old setup?

Your netgear will have a NAT/SPI firewall - while i would still reccommend a personal firewall it's not that big a deal because the router offers more protection than Zone Alarm does, but Zone Alarm gives better program control.....

Turning of zone alarm with that set up won't be a problem.

What netgear model is it? DG384GT per chance? If so, thats the same as mine (the 108mbps model?)

You say you are connected at 54mbps, are you very near the router?
