Net books Has anyone got one? Are they any good? Thinking of getting one. Would only be used for internet, little bit of word processing, and downloading stuff. I'm suspicious of how cheap they are though, don't know whether to just pay the extra for a 'real' laptop.
why not just pay the extra and not be limited to only using the internet / word processing / downloads (only with external hdd)? theres not a lot of difference between a budget laptop and a net book, but you'll kick yourself if you have to buy twice a relative bought a netbook when they first came out and the last time i did a repair for her it was on a laptop, the netbook didnt do enough - and she needs help finding the start button on windows
Are Sony any good? Thinking of this one in particular: [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-15-5inch-Notebook-Windows-Premium/dp/B002RSIN66/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1256396844&sr=1-38"]Sony VAIO NW20SF/S 15.5inch Notebook: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo[/ame]
I just bought a Samsung N130 yesterday, after i found out you could upgrade them to 2gb ram. The one thing that i hate about netbooks is the 1gb ram restriction that seems to be in place.
I did a shit load of research on them and narrowed the best netbooks down to the Samsung NC10 or later, and the Asus 1005HA. My budget was about £300 so there will be slightly better ones available but not for less than about £400 which is a daft amount to pay for a netbook anyway. I love mine. It can be upgraded to 2GB ram in about 1 minute and it's about £15 to buy a 2GB module. I've left mine at 1GB and have no problems with it. I use it for browsing (always have loads of tabs open in firefox, it doesn't cause any slow downs etc). I watch films on it, listen to music etc etc. I don't know what specs you need for football manager, but I can easily play older games such as Unreal Tournament, GTA Vice City perfectly. I expected the frame rates to be shitty but they aren't. The best thing about this 1005HA though is the 9 hour battery life. It's rated at 10.5 hours but with wifi enabled etc it's really about 9.. I highly recommend this model (Asus EeePC 1005HA N280). The myth that netbooks are shitty and slow is a load of bollocks unless you buy the first, cheapest one you see in curry's. There are obvious restrictions obviously.. ie. you'd be better off with a desktop if you're into proper gaming, or video/photo editing but for what you asked, you won't get a better netbook/laptop than this when you consider the portability and battery life. Only £277 now. Bargain. There's a newer version out now but it has a slightly slower processor, but comes with Windows 7. You can easily install windows 7 on your own though but it's not as fast as winxp, and not really necessary anyway. I tried it then went bak to winxp.
Just set mine up tonight. Totally class. Using it with my denon controller and mixer as a trakor based digital dj'ing setup. Works a dream! Once again, it was being able to upgrade the ram that sealed the deal for me. I couldnt give much of a stuff about processor power these days.
I'm assuming the apps you use for your setup are quite demanding in terms of ram then? Have you noticed much of a difference with basic usage though? I don't really feel like anything needs to run/load faster at the minute so I'm holding back on the ram upgrade for now.
well its just a regular version of windows xp isnt it - on any laptop i've used in recent times, the first things they need are ram upgrades before you can do anything decent without the swap disc going mental. Traktor is probably low cpu use, but i'd imagine getting 100 meg wav files in and out of memory means its best off having a ton of ram in reserve.
Yeah but like I said, I haven't found a reason to upgrade yet. The 1GB seems to be enough for general usage so I'm not going to upgrade unless someone tells me that the overall speed is increased
Computers are loads better now, I hate people with slow ones. I remember back when I used to right click and had to wait for a menu to load up. Shocking!
I remember when we bought our first ever PC for £1099. PII 233MHz with 64MB RAM and onboard graphics!! It was a full page colour add in one of the pc mags.
