Modem Troubles I still can't get my modem to work but I think I may have found the problem. When I go into the properties for the modem it says its connected to COM3, but then in the device manager, in the ports section, there is no COM3. Anyone got any idea what I can do now??? I bet its this bastard XP thats done it too.
If the modem was already installed when you upgraded the OS then XP may not have configured it correctly. Try physically removing the modem from the PC and from device manager then reconnect it and boot PC. XP should redetect it and reinstall the drivers. BTW do you have the correct driver for XP?? If not then look on the net (stick "device driver" in search and you'll find loads).
Cheers, I had thought of opening up the computer and doing something like that, I'll give it a go. And I'm fairly sure I've got the right drivers, I've left all the instruction manuals at my old house though so I'll get them back tonight and check. Cheers again.
Right, eventually I've tried all that was suggested but nothing seems to work. I physically took out the modem and uninstalled the drivers then put it back in and re-installed everything and it still does the same. I even tried this again and put the modem in a different slot in the computer and the same happened. Then I found the latest driver on the net and when you try to install them XP reckons that it isn't any newer than the one I already have. Any more ideas?? Its doing me friggin' head in now. I just wanna smash it or something but I know if I do, someone'll have a solution the next day.
mate u shouldnt try and reinstall the driver over the top of the previous one!!! u need to uninstall it then put the new driver on!!!
Yeah, I think thats what I did anyway, but windows XP seems to automatically install its own driver without even giving me the option to use this newer one.
thats funny well if u can uninstall the driver and reinstall the new one without restarting that might be the solution!!!
unfortunately XP is rather shite so ull probs just have to have a bit of a play around with it until the right driver is installed!!!
hes right, XP hates old pci cards, it hated my modem so i did what any normal person would do, reformat the HD, install win 98 again and stamp on the xp cd!
I had thought of doing that but I couldn't find an option to make a boot disk in XP so wasn't sure how to go about it.
