    generally its to see if there is somebody at the other end!! ie that there is a connection.....

    ....it may well have an extra function in messenger though.

    depends how it's used, but yeah. U ping another machine to basically see if it's there and how long the round trip of the packet takes.

    all depends who/where you're pinging. probs won't make that much different cause the packets are so small they won't be affected that much whether it's on asdl or dial up. but i ain't no network engineer.

    and it's usually in millisecs.

    ^ what he said!

    hes right, its in milliseconds....but then again it might be different in plus, because "pong" is not a correct term....heres what usually happens when you ping:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>ping 195.82.117.109

    Pinging 195.82.117.109 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 195.82.117.109: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=117
    Reply from 195.82.117.109: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=117
    Reply from 195.82.117.109: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=117
    Reply from 195.82.117.109: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=117

    Ping statistics for 195.82.117.109:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 24ms, Maximum = 25ms, Average = 24ms

    "pong" is the same as "reply" above.

    As for the ADSL/56k connection, it doesnt really work like that, theres other factors that can affect it, such as ISP load etc, but itll not usually take 3 seconds to get each reply from a 56ker, thats 3000ms!

    well i investigated, heres the results from a 56k on AOL, just proof of how shite AOL really is, with its class c addresses, sheesh:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>ping 172.190.117.23

    Pinging 172.190.117.23 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 172.190.117.23: bytes=32 time=511ms TTL=116
    Reply from 172.190.117.23: bytes=32 time=442ms TTL=116
    Reply from 172.190.117.23: bytes=32 time=1900ms TTL=116
    Reply from 172.190.117.23: bytes=32 time=4023ms TTL=116

    Ping statistics for 172.190.117.23:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 442ms, Maximum = 4023ms, Average = 1719ms

    hardly a steady conneciton eh!

    Better ISPs such as Pixex would be alot faster and stable mind, but that gives you the general idea, im suprised it took so long, doesnt usually take that long mind.
