newcastle city council: "yesterday, we unveiled a plaque at the legendary riverside venue on melbourne street, honouring its iconic place in newcastle's musical history. established in 1985, riverside hosted nirvana's first european gig as well as music icons david bowie and gil scott heron, leaving an indelible mark on our city. and on a week where oasis announced their reunion, we can reveal how one of their early gigs was also held at the legendary riverside club. it was more than a music venue, this was a place founded by volunteers in a co-operative and represents the cultural heartbeat of our wonderful city. councillor nick kemp was joined at the plaque unveiling by one of those volunteers, keith jeffrey, as riverside was cemented in our city's history."
