Mechanics? Broke down last night and had to get my cousins mate to tow me. He's checked it out today and reckons that the cylinder head is cracked and will cost a canny bit to fix........ then promptly offered me a couple of hundred quid for a 2001 Corsa. Anyone mechanics on here know what the parts/labour etc.. on this should cost?
yarrrrr I'm a qualified vauxhall mechanic. £200quid seems about fine aslong as thats including the parts and labour. Get it done yourself, seriously its piece of piss especially on a corsa B. What size engine is it a 1.2 or a 1.0?
He offered me 200 for the car, not the job. He quoted me £250 to replace the cylinder head. Reckons it will be well over £500 if the cover is warped or cracked. There was no pressure on all the cylinders when he ran a test this morning. It's a 1.0 btw.
eh who deleted my last post? anyways i said it might be worth buying a used engine, should be able to pick one up for next to nowt and thats even easier to fit that the head gasket....
The problem with jobs like this isn't the parts, it's the labour involved. I had a valve fail on the engine of my first car - it dropped into the cylinder causing the engine to sieze - engine was a write off. I found an engine at a scrap yard with 50,000 miles on it (it was newer than my car), and it was only £180. The labour to get it fitted was £500.... If you're confident and competent, it's worth having a go yourself. I do all my own servicing and whilst I've never replaced a cylinder head, as long as you have a Haynes Manual and plenty of time on your hands it can't be that big a deal. The only problem is if your engine block is warped or distorted with your head. It's unlikely but it's best to get it checked out before you start buying bits from a scrap yard to fix it.
if you wanted to replace an engine. once you have made sure you know whe basics of what has to be done then all you really need to do is find out where the mounts are. (on your corsa 2 either side of the engine and one at the back of engine) and take off everything attached to the engine. if you never done it before just label everything so you kno what goes where take you a few hours.....i would do it for you but go no tools anymore :~(
Knowing Vauxhall, it'll probably be the same gearbox across the range apart from the 1.6 engine (SXI). Same with the mounts. If you try googling round for corsa related forums, you should be able to find some guidance on the ins and outs of it all. There was only one size of engine for mine, but it did vary based on year. The latest engine I could fit in mine was a 2003 model with 65bhp, after that they'd changed the mounts to fit a different kind of engine into the car.
I might just fuck all the hassle and get a new car. Any websites other than autotrader that are good for searching for cars?
the offer of 200 for the car is a piss take . he'd fix it and sell it on , i know , i do that with damaged cars .
TFish Motors now has a Transport Wagon available for hire or rescue. If you break down or need a car shifting from A to B get in touch. For a fee of course
I know that mate. My dads mate's gonna take it apart and see if it needs skimming. He's gonna do that for £60 then give me a qoute on the rest of the work if owt else needs doing.
probably well late on this now but noticed on my way home on the bus this morning there's a garage down in dunston that specialises in cylinder heads, it's near revolution motors, it's next to that metz pub where gazza keeps getting himself into trouble
there cheap aswell! we used to take our cylinder heads there and then say we did them and charged the customer more! sneaky vauxhall
