We are thrilled to have something different for you at the Star & Shadow in the form of Cooly G, one of the finest female (or either gender, for that matter) leftfield Dubstep/UK Funky/ House producers around at the moment, offering an alternative to the usual Newcastle party scene.

Cooly G, signed to Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Joker, Ikonika) , a semi-pro female footballer, producer and DJ from Brixton, describes her sound as havi......ng a "deep house tribal dubstep vibe," and you can see why - Cooly G's productions exist in their own hinterland - abstract post-garage beats that slowly shuffle into life, dubbed out, with her own cut up vocal snippets singing painterly half phrases. Terms such as Dubstep and UK Funky immediately come to mind when trying to describe her, but there is an undeniable deep house element that gives her music a smooth edge and makes it all the more difficult to fit into genre clichés.

Something of a child prodigy (she learned to DJ at the age of seven and was teaching music technology to men three times her age two months after leaving school), she’s the second female producer on Hyperdub alongside Ikonika.

Her first single got people pretty excited, she was single of the week in the Guardian Newspaper, One to Watch in the Independent newspaper, has played with Kode9, got interviewed all over and was immediately snapped up for remixes by the majors as well as starting to get bookings all over the world.

“…numerous music message boards are currently being bombarded with people praising her groove fuelled house beats and sparse minimalist touches. Her live performances are usually a gathering of club fanatics that have been captivated by her new take on house music…” – The Skinny

    MORE DJs
    ---------

We also have a fine selection of local DJs to set up the party mood on the night, starting with Becky warming up the night. Becky does a monthly night at the Tanners, is a fixture at Ladyrave and has supported NoName nights in and around Newcastle. Has an ecletic taste in electronic music and likes keep things fun. Expect anything from house and techno through to garage and a whole host of subgenres in the middle. Expect to dance.

Then moving on to Deviate and Natural Selection resident, Capo Ultra, who regresses from futuristic Juke endeavours to embark on a single minded quest to initiate involuntary body movement armed with but a simple mantra: drop the tempo, increase the groove.

Gareth Hocking will be keeping the fire burning bright and hard after Cooly G’s set to make sure there’s no drop in rhythm or a reason to stop dancing. Expect a selection of Dubstep, UK Funky and House and the skills he’s developed over the years after starting his own night Resistance, through to dj-ing for Curves, Freaky Dancing, Arcane and plenty more parties on the way.
Check out this mix by him for a taster:
