Mandrake or Redhat Im installing Linux on my new pc and im not sure which OS to use, anyone tried either of them?
Mandrake was one of the defenders of the earth. Sorry Webba I aint got a fucking clue. Windows all the way for me!!!!
Mandrake is nice.....tis nice n easy.... Never really liked Redhat.... FreeBSD (a know its not linux heheh!) or Slackware are what I wud suggest tho But - to be honest - unless u got a good need....stick to windows mate!
Well done Jimmy. You've just helped me answer the final question in a picture quiz of oldie kids telly. There's a bald black dude and a little nip, sorry I mean oriental kid aswell. Am I right or am I right??
Have to learn it for my new job as ill be installin it on a few servers. Im just gonna buy a 10gig hd, pull my old windows one out and install linux on the new one. Just so I can switch easily from one to the other
yep, nothing less, just been reading through the installation, seems ok, plus ive already checked that there are drivers for all my stuff which there is.
Redhat is good crack, my personal fave is version 7.2 (8.0 reminds me of XP far too much) Mandrake is meant to be good, but I can't comment because I've never used it. If you've never used linux before, don't start with slackware - it's hard as fuck! A good starter would be SuSE
agreed about not starting with slack..lol...talk about thrown in at deepend mandrake is an EXCELLENT starting point for linux...... also maybe worth a look is Lindows (www.lindows.com)..........
Sorry to go against everyone but I use Redhat and its ACE!!! Very popular amongst corporations too, So its worth learning even if its a bit harder (Installation can be a motherfuker mind) sure yours doesn’t use it Webba???
Redhat has never been a fav of mine...not sure why if im honest its just never "felt" right.......... Slackware is secure but a pain in the arse! SUSE is nice and user friendly.....as is Mandrake...problem with mandrake tho is that it aint as robust as the rest....and is a bit too in ur face graphic friendly...if this is wot u want tho...summit holding ur hand most of way, then its ideal! Basically tho its all down to preferance....try a few out n see which YOU like best
Get a copy of vmware, makes learning a new OS alot easier. That way you can still google for help if you get stuck. We use redhat for servers and some desktops although most people still use xp/2000 (as we can play redalert2 on win boxes).
Linux is great for networks yeah... but as a desktop pc..... Ive yet to know someone who runs linux (or variants) who DOESNT have a windows machine to fall back on when they hit a brick wall with linux... ... which happens alot *me puts on flame retardant suit*
vmware is a gud idea...... never used it for a while actually...wonder what the latest versions r like... umm..shall have to have a play ;-)
