louis theroux taking on Phili watched his documentary tonight and thought it was sort of refreshing to see somthing like this on BBC2, and it was shocking to see the conditions in the places he visited. However i think that he wasnt really the bloke for the job tbh - i rekon his past documentaries have been class (e.g wierd weekends) but i just think he looked a bit 'too' out of place in such situations, and just makes himself look a bit too ignorant at times (even though he's blatently leading people to say things most of the time). ross kemp does gritty stuff like this well on 'kemp on gangs' however i think that he portray's too much information from himself, rather than the audience figuring out opinions for themselves through the way it's edited, like theroux's films. still tho - with top gear on beforehand it was a solid 2 hours of entertaining TV (for a change)
This was just like an episode of cops really was nowhere near as good as some of his older documentaries like the one when he met the Hamiltons and the wrestling one. The next one looks interesting about Johanesberg (sp?) though.
yeah - well below his usual stuff - didn't really have any conslusions or shed any new light - but he got some balls!
One of my mates (Yeovil) used to live in Phili. Reckons it's a crazy old place. I missed this, but I've always enjoyed his docs. I'll probs catch it on iPlayer this week.
The Wire is fucking awesome, so real it had to be written by someone with a clue and it was... cant wait to get into David Simons book "life on the streets"
