    Lindows OS

    Anyone tried this?

    ( www.lindows.com )

    Ive just installed version 2.0 and must say it looks pretty decent!

    Its basically linux, but got the ability, well sort of, to run quite a few windows programs.

    Still got a long way to go, but looking good..........

    Cant be bothered to mess about with it anymore tho for now so gonna stick Windows back on.. :p

    Heh

    Good old trying to mix unices with Windows, not a bad shot on Lindows part.

    RedHat for server == acceptable

    RedHat for desktop != acceptable + == slap on wrist.

    -----

    You need the real thing, hit UNIX, BSD or Solaris ;)

    probs quite expansive tho!!!:(

    wouldnt mind a Unix machine

    Winlinux is its own OS but it just has a lot of plug and play capabilities like windows so if anyone wanted to have a play with a Linux OS I would recommend it!!!

    UNIX

    Commercial UNIX is expensive. HP-UX etc.

    Such items like BSD UNIX is not. FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD and PicoBSD all free.

    BSDi is commercial, thus costly.

    WinLinux is the Linux OS (GPL) modified to run under a windows system arch. Note: You can't charge to make profit from open source software e.g. Linux :)

    It is interesting, I see a lot of people getting into Linux, including school children of all ages. It is good to see flavours of Linux arrive that have been build and modified for such specific reasons.

    Heh....

    Sorry, I was in a rush at the time of writing finishing off some source for a clients application.

    != is not equal too
    == is equal too

    So in effect, RedHat for desktop purposes is not acceptable and so it is equal too getting a slap on the wrist ;)

    However, for server purposes it is good and steady :)

    Sun Ultra Sparc 5 Unix Workstation - Honestly.... you could. Easy pick one up for under £50. Depends on what spec you are after. Naturally £50 is a cheap buy of the unit only etc.

    Are you saying you would rather a Sun Sparc and run Solaris or? The BSDs I mentioned are operating systems and they will also run on the Sparc architecture.

    If you wanna pick up a cheap Sparc station get yourself onto Ebay.......loads about...some cheaper than others!!

    Why not tho, to get a basic feel for it tho check out one of the free BSD packages?

    All available for free download on the web........

    Just an idea like but may save u some £££ :D

    Re: Heh....

    I agree redhat makes a nice server!!!

    Was saying i would rather have a dedicated machine for my unix stuff!!! Rather then use the FreeBSD OS so i could have a stand alone machine that i could run the same time as my other stuff just like iv done with readhat!!!

    Reason for choosing a Sun Ultra Sparc 5 Unix Workstation is firstly coz they are cheap that the mo(coz of speed ect but would be fine for what i want to do) and im used to them coz i play with them at uni and know thats what we will be using if we do any work on Unix so i know they are suitable!!!:) ;)

    Re: Re: Heh....

    FreeBSD OS is an OS just like UNIX is. Each has variants. Running a system with just "UNIX" is just like running a system with just "BSD" :)

    Indeed, it is better to run it singularly than in a multi boot environment. Unices hold very good stability and reliability records. Why keep powering down and switching environments :) [Though some reasons do exist such as test systems etc. An entirely different discussion however.]

    Looking back over this, it has been a good discussion, thanks to all those who took part *hands out gold stars* :cool:
