Lets all help Marc and PC!

Right, after a short visit last night, we stumbled upon the conclusion that it's OVERHEATING. it's a Fujitsu Scaleo T P4 3.2Ghz

There's a strange BIOS message coming up (it's a Fujitsu machine so has it's own, unbranded motherboard in) thats says "System Management something - BIOS has changed or a problem occured" If you go in and look the System Management screen is reporting that the Thermal Sensor State on the CPU has FAILED but the system one is OK

Now, to me i think that the sensor is knackered and according to Fujitsu owners forum there seems to be a problem with the cooling of these machines http://support.fujitsu-siemens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17276

    So

    1) is the motherboard shafted? it runs ok-ish when the side is off
    2) could we just replace the fan/heatsink?

    Thoughts?

AAANNNNDDDD more importantly - WHAT heatsink/Fan combo should we buy to remedy this?

Is this a socket a or 939 system?

Also.. what fan arrangement is currently installed and do ya have an issue with sound (ie how loud the fans are..)

if coins no issue, get a new mainboard. alternatively get a aero 7 fan setup or whatever full copper heatsink. touch up the cpu top plate with arctic silver 5 aswell

i forgot to check - whats the easiest way of telling? i don't think it's the newer type of P4's (prescotts?)

sound shouldn't be an issue really - unless marc wants it really quiet?

fill the bath and drop it in there to clean all the parts inside, then put it in the sun to dry.

I'm 100% sure that will work/it will be the dust on everything inside thats making it overheat.

P4's are clever compared to athlons. When they get too hot the board throttles them back to reduce the temp (read this ) and therefore prevent damage to the system.

Your board and CPU will be fine, however you need a new cooler and fast. I'd recommend an intake or exhaust fan if you don't already have one.

    have a look at these:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/cat/Processors/subcat/Cooling-Fans

and pick one with the largest block and fan you can find, preferably a zalman or akasa jobby and that should do the trick.

stay away from the budget ones though, they suck.

does it matter what processor type it's for? u don't reckon the dodgy thermal sensor will cause a problem?

I'd email intel/dell about that, it's possible the CPU uses the board to determine the temperature so you may be alright, but if it doesn't you could be shafted.

Fujitsu are shite... can't get thru to their tech support and their forums are equally crap. hardly any info on what their mainboard is/does, rubbish manuals.

phah. ta for the info on the coolers.

"The Pentium 4 core comes equipped with a thermal monitoring unit that permanently checks the temperature. As soon as the core temperature has reached a certain trigger value, the thermal unit throttles down the clock of Pentium 4 until a safe temperature has been reached."

Think it's time for a new CPU :(
