Footballer sought after car crash leaves man dead
    By Lewis Smith

A FOOTBALLER was being hunted by detectives last night after being accused of running away from the scene of a fatal car crash.

Lee Hughes, a striker with West Bromwich Albion, is said to have been driving a £93,500 car that was in collision with another vehicle, killing a rear-seat passenger.

The dead man, believed to be in his 60s, suffered severe head injuries from the impact and was pronounced dead at hospital. His wife was sitting next to him and suffered a broken leg.

Police raided the player’s £700,000 detached mock- Tudor home in the village of Meriden, Warwickshire, three hours after the crash but could find no sign of him.

Neighbours of the Nationwide League First Division player, whose front door showed clear signs yesterday of a forced entry, said that they had not seen him or his wife and daughter.

Neil Fewings, Mr Hughes’s agent, refused to comment on a report that he had spoken to the striker since the accident. A spokesman for West Bromwich Albion also refused to make any comment.

Mr Hughes, who won a golden boot award in 1999 for scoring more goals than any other player in any division, was with four other men in the Mercedes CL 55 coupé when it was in collision with a Renault Mégane in Coventry shortly after midnight yesterday.

Three of the passengers stayed with the vehicle as emergency services were summoned but Mr Hughes, 27, and a companion are said to have left the scene on foot.

The driver of the Mégane suffered a broken pelvis and the front-seat passenger escaped with bruising. The dead man’s wife was being treated at Coventry and Warwick Hospital.

The crash is thought to have taken place after the Renault turned on to the A45 in Coventry.

Police are still investigating the cause and will look at factors such as the speed of the vehicles, the road conditions and whether either of the drivers had been drinking.

A police spokesman said: “We have a very good idea who the driver of the car is and we are very keen to talk to him as he was involved in a fatal road traffic accident. We did go to his house and forced entry, but there was nobody at home.

“The male driver and a male passenger of the Mercedes left the scene. Three male passengers stayed at the scene. None of them suffered serious injuries.

“We can confirm we are looking to trace the driver of the Mercedes who was not at the scene of the accident when we arrived. We would urge him to contact his local police station.” Police were also attempting to trace members of the player’s family to see if they were able to help to track him down.

The dead man, from Coventry, will not be named by police until he has been identified formally. Friends laid two bunches of flowers at the scene of the crash.

One card, on a bunch of white flowers, read: “A tragic end to a great night out. Rest in peace.”

The card on another bunch of pale yellow roses by the roadside read: “To Doug, God Bless.”

Mr Hughes, a former roofer, was signed by Kidderminster Harriers in 1995 before being sold to West Bromwich Albion two years later for £250,000.

He was transferred to Coventry in 2001 for £5 million but went back to the Hawthorns a year later where he played in the Premiership before the team was relegated.
