Lee Foster in The Journal Page 4.......... It is the classic English style house which has dressed some of the most graceful of the world's beautiful people for almost 150 years. Its checked design is recognisable across the globe and has been worn by such style icons as Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham and Nicholas Parsons. So why are the clubs and pubs of Newcastle turning Burberry-clad revellers away from their doors? Well, it's the charva effect - the late-teens/early 20 year-olds who have, quite frankly, taken it too far. Think of that famous picture of reality TV crybaby Daniella Westbrook with her Burberry skirt, Burberry jacket, Burberry shoes, Burberry umbrella Burberry pushchair and Burberry baby boy! Charva is not a derogatory term. The charva knows who he or she is and advertises the fact by regularly using phrases like "nash" (which means move swiftly, "hockle" to spit, "double cush" for very good and "chaw" to steal. It is the charva factor that has resulted in clubs banning Burberry's classic designs through their doors. Lee Foster, a resident at Promise nightclub based at The Foundation in Newcastle, said it is the attitude of people who wear the clothes which clubs are wary of rather than disliking the design itself. "I always say today's charva is tomorrow's clubber," he said. "People who turn up to a club wearing Burberry or scruffy trainers are making a statement about themselves and should know they are going to get turned away, but hopefully they will go home and think about what happened and come back again looking smarter. Clubs thrive on good security, good clientele, decent drinks and a good atmosphere and if the standards fall then people won't come back so that's why dress codes are important." A spokeswoman from Gateshead Quayside's Baja Beach Club said they too were banning the Burberry. "We class it alongside sportswear in our dress code and if people turn up in Burberry, we don't let them in," she said. Earlier this year BNP leader Nick Griffin was pictured flanked by two minders sporting Burberry baseball caps - a look that has also been adopted by football hooligans. Indeed, it is the association of the brand with football that has led Greys Club manager Tommy Wright using a discretionary policy on his club's door. He said: "We let people in wearing Burberry, but if they arrive wearing one of the checked jackets we ask them to leave it in the cloakroom. "It's nothing against the brand - just that when people are in a club wearing the same style jacket it starts to look more like a football match than a nightclub. "Dress codes are vital to prevent would-be trouble-makers from coming in. If somebody comes in dressed smartly and has taken time over their appearance they are less likely to want to cause trouble." ----------- Rumours that Lee refused to answer when The Journal asked him the name of track 4 on his Promise CD can not be confirmed.
